Default Moon Shot

Hi everyone,

I have had a couple of cheap digital cameras the last couple if years and recently decided to jump into ot with both feet. Went to several websites for reviews and recommemdations for starters. Then I decided to go to a professional camera shop and let them help me with what they thought would be a good camera in my price range.

Finally decided on a Panasonic DCM-FZ7 because of the zoom (66x) and the Micro abiltities. I also have to say all the purdy buttons and features caught my eye also. Now I am slowing but surely learning some of the technical terms and uses of the cameras features.

Just found this forum the other night and I am excited about learning how to use my digital camera with the help of Chuck and all of you. Pretty impressed with what I have seen from all of you. Great pictures, really informative information and a really feindly bunch of people.

Here is a picture of the moon I took a week or so ago on one of our Oregon cold nights. I was really happy with the shots and thought I would share with you guys one of my best so far.

tinkb - That moon shot cannot be taken without some form of telephoto lens... what type of telephoto lens did you use for that image? I like it!

That pic cannot be taken with the Panosonic camera that only has a 12x optical zoom....Impossible. My canon 20d with a 300mm lense cant do it.

Default Total Lunar Eclipse

This is one of my photo's of the January 20th total lunar eclipse back in 2000. It was taken with an Olympus OM-1 SLR camera affixed to a 127mm Celestron Nexstar Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope lens with a focal length of 1250mm.

Bucky, that image is possible if a telephoto lens of some sort was used... also, there are adapters that can take any digital camera and allow that camera to shoot through the eyepiece of a telescope... not an ideal way for astrophotography, but possible. Scopetronix.com sells them.

You mention you have a Canon 20D camera... EXCELLENT camera... Canon also later produced a Canon 20Da ... the "a" stands for "astronomy" or "astrophotography"... Canon modified the 20D chip to have stronger sensitivity for the use in astrophotography. However the camera sells for about 2000 dollars! Cheaper than a lot of CCD camera's out there, however. That is one camera I would love to purchase!

Well infact this was taken with my DCM-FZ7 ponasonic camera without any lense attachemnt. My camera is infact a 12x lens and will zoom in to 66X. One of the reason I bought this camer over so many more I looked at.

I told the man at the camera shop I wanted the best zoom ability I could get on a camera still keeping the ability of some good Macro shots. I tried several cameras he suggested until we fires up the FZ7. I used a couple of building in the area to zoom in on. When he set the camera into full zoom, 66 or 67 it blew the others away. I was sold.

I have to say, from your remarks, at first I kind of felt insulted. One ask what kind of attachment I used while another said it was impossible for me to take such a shot, like I tried making the camera seem better then it was. Then it hit me, hey this must alot better camera then I though, yahoo.

But honestly people, this is a shot I took without an attached lense as this camera is not equipted to use other lenses. But then again it has 12x optical zoom lense.

I apologize if I offended you in any way. I have been an avid photographer for many years. A main hobby of mine is astronomy and astrophotography. I personally have yet to handle a camera that could achieve such an image as yours through zoom capabilities without the aid of a telephoto lens. All in all you have a great photograph. Congrats!

No insult taken Stephan. Just kind of surprised me that this was such an unusual photo. Being new with both the camera and the ability to actual set it up right yet, it more of a compliment I guess. Thanks everyone for your responses and welcomes to the forum.

Personally I think I am more impressed with some of your close ups then I am with my zoom shots. The details are remarkable on the bugs, pets and scenes. This forum is going to be fun to come visit and a great learning place.
