Hey E,
A pinpointer is a handheld device that will alert you to the exact location of a metal object (within usually .5" to 1", although some go up to 3"). It will help especially if the metal is very small and the same color as the dirt. It will also help if you just can't figure out where in the plug or walls of the hole your target lies. It's a beautiful thing. I like the Vibra Probe 560 (the newer 570 is out now, too). I have only tried one other and I know that others work well, too. They can be a bit pricey, but if you're as addicted as I am, you'll probably get one. :)

they work hand in hand with your detector, once you dig your hole it finds the coin with out searching the dirt with your hands , very good to have one , the vibraprobe 560 is the best ,

You use them in addition to a MD. Once you start to dig, if you find that it's difficult to locate your target, you can then use the pinpointer in the hole that you have dug and normally you can zero in on where your target lies. Here's a link to the new VibraProbe 570. Vibra - Probe 570 Metal Detector - Kellyco Metal Detectors It's a pretty cool little thing. It has helped me find something as small as a staple in a handful of sand before.

Yup, I would be lost without mine. Saves time. And Dave, I have spent a lot of time the last 3 hunts trying to pull a switcharoo with my new hunting buddy. I use the Vibraprobe 560 and he has the new 570. It is a bit better as far as I can tell and detects objects at a greater distance. Oh well maybe Santa will hook me up

If you are hunting old, valuable coins, it will help you to locate them in the hole before you scratch it with your digging tool.
