I am completely new to this hobby and I was wondering what consensus is on pinpointers before I purchase one. I will soon be getting my very first MD (ACE250). Would a pinpointer be worthwhile in the long run? Which model or models would be best and what cost?
Thanks, Steve |

Go with the Vibraprobe. It's one of the bst and very durable. I sell them at discount.

I think you're missing the point of the hand held pinpointer. It is used so as to not widen a hole too large and to also pinpoint the object better in the hole so you don't damage it. Coins on edge or an angle tend to pinpoint to the side with your detector. All detectors have pinpointing capabilities so all detectors have pinpointing built in. Some are just more accurate than others. Scratch a 100.00 coin
and you'll use one too.

I don't have a problem digging in the right spot but I do have a problem seeing my target once I start digging. My vision isn't the best and if the target is the same color as the dirt, that is often the case, I use a hand held pinpointer to find it. It has saved me countless hours of going back and sifting through the plug and loose dirt. I wouldn't be without mine. Monty

My last outing, I got a good signal, I used my pinpointer on my XLT, I use my coin probe to mark the center, dug my hole. To make a long story short, I was off by 1.5 in.
My pinponter said it was 3.5 " deep, i was already 5" deep. pinpointing a hole using the detector while on your knees is problematic on it's own. I stood up got another pinpoint reading, found out it was 1.5 in off from the hole, made the correction and found a quarter at 3.5" deep. This was after 20 min of digging and re-pinpointing with my detector. As far as I'm concerned a hand held pinpointer went from a "wants" to a "need".![]() |
