Question Error Coin?

I found this 1984 Penny and was wondering if it was an error coin or had it been tempered with? If you look close, you'll see that the Lincoln side is perfectly indented, as if somebody pushed their thumb through putty, while the reverse side is rounded...Other than normal wear, I didn't see any outstanding marks or scratches where it might have been tampered with? Any thoughts on this one?
