Default Strange coins

I have 2 coins that where my father's. He worked for a bank. both are clad coins, one penny and one nickle. Here's the thing...I am not sure if he did it or not. Both have holes punched in them. I say punched because the holes, to me at least, look to smooth to have been drilled, and the holes look like they are the size of a standard hole punch.... Weird huh?

Anyone seen anything like this before? If you like I can get a pic or 2 to add.

I have never heard of banks putting holes in coins.....I figured they would just melt them down..........

Its not uncommon for coins to come into a bank which have been damaged ,,Holed or otherwise ,, it used to be policy for the banks to pull defaced coin and currency from circulation and return it to the mint for destruction.

its hard telling the reason behind someone putting holes in coins ,, but I have a few that I have either found or purchased ,, the purchased ones are fractional gold coins .

Question

Could be from a number of reasons.Someone making something to wear, ornament, necklace, etc.or maybe a ring, although for a ring we usually waited till it was formed to make the hole.No way to tell now.

I don't think its jewlery. The holes are the size of a paper punch. I will try to get some pics posted tonight.

Cool Interesting

The coins may have been punched with a metal punch that someone was playing with. The clue would be in the marks inside the edge of the hole. If they go more or less streight from one face to the other, it is probably punched. If they are in a concentric patern inside the hole, then it is almost certainly a drilled hole. I am looking forward to seeing photos of these.
