Default Help

Errors or misstrikes are not my cup of tea.

My grand-daughter was playing around on the sofa when she pulled this penny out from under one of the cushions. It's a 1999D. The observe appears to be normal but the reverse is blank. No die marks, no grind marks, slick as glass. I have put it under 10X mag and the only thing visible other than minor contact marks is two dark spots near the center of the coin. Although I haven't had it weighed it seem lighter than a normal penny. I plan to have it weighed tomorrow.

The closest coin store is about an hour away and I don't have any travel plans for the near future. I will take it with me next trip.

If possible, I'm looking for info and possible value. Sorry for the ugly photos.

Thanks
John

Hey coinhunter, looks like you have an error coin. I've seen them with both sides blank but never just one. First thing, Don't clean it! Second, you live about 1 hour or less from Memphis, so take the coin the either Midsouth Coin Shop on Park Ave. or to the Large flea market every Third weekend of the month and let them look at it. The coin shop can send it to be graded if they feel it is worth doing. It may be worth something and it may not. If you find someone who collects error coins, then of course it would be worth more to them. It's amazing what can be just lying around the house.

Had the penny weighed today. It weighed 2.5 grams. Full weight for a copper plated zinc cent. That leads me to believe that the reverse wasn't ground off. Planning on taking it to a coin store within the next couple of weeks.

The minting process does not allow for a single sided unstruck coin .

Since the missing side is also missing the copper plating and the obverse appears to be normal in appearance ,,my guess is that the coin has been mechanically altered ,,by use of a dremel,or maybe even an end mill,, its really hard to tell what device was used ,but the coin in my opinion is definitely altered post mint.

Default Interesting . . .

How can we explain it being the full weight of a normal penny though?
