Question Error coin or a post-mint treatment??

Found it in my change. Has no marks to indicate it was in a vice. Thanks for any help & ideas.

Hi wvatom

The first coin looks like post mint damage to me ,, perhaps ground with a dremel tool or something ,, the second one is more interesting although I cant tell for sure ,,it appears that it may have been struck in a wrong collar.

have you weighed the coin ? what does the edge of the coin look like ?

Yes I would say the 1st coin was something that happened after it was mad and in circulation. I can not see a coin that old working it's way through the public and not being snatched up by someone. It is however very interesting and I would keep it with my other keeper coins. Always interesting what people do to there coins sometimes and you just have to wonder what kind of life the coin has had.

Oh and that 2nd coin looks very interesting. Keep us updated.

Exclamation The coin on the left....

is the one in question and the one on the right is just something to compar it too. I tend to agree with you guy's about it being post mint but the only thing that get's me is the odd rim around it. I will post a better picture in a few minutes. Thanks very much for the replys and help

OK I get it !! sorry I assumed they were different coins but they are just two sides of the same coin with a comparison coin beside it .

the obverse appears to me to be post mint ,,effect on the rim could still be a wrong collar strike ,or now with the correct understanding of the pics I suppose it could also be a relic of what happened to the obverse .

what does the coin weigh ?

You know what it looks like to me? It looks like whatever was done to the obverse caused a bit of a lip to be formed. If you line up another nickel does it seem to be a lip?

I may be crazy, but do you think someone could have melted it and the metal just squished out to the sides like a candle?

I really don't know anything about coins, so this may be totally ludicrous.

Unhappy Post mint damage

It is light for a nickel at 3.5 grams (5 grams new), this weight loss along with the defacement showing marks at different angles would indicate after mint damage.
