I saw a similar coin a few years ago…it’s done with a metal lathe. You cut out the middle of a penny and then cut the edges off of the dime and press them together

I'm with Pauley on this one. Even mint errors are screwed up better than that. That's someone having fun with coins.

Dave, I'll answer the best that I can on this one. More than likely it is man's handiwork BUT there is such a thing as an "Eclipse" dime. It would be hard to tell unless I actually had the coin in hand and could examine it.
All dimes, quarters and halves are struck on "Sandwich" blanks that have a copper core.

Dave,
Can you give us the diameter of the coin? Or maybe a comparison to a good dime to show any size difference. I am certain this is someones handiwork, but if it is undersize in diameter that would confirm that someone has beaten the edges to roll them over, this was done to silver coins to make them into rings by tapping the edge with a spoon to roll it over, then the center was cut out to make the opening of the ring. Since this dime comes from the 1980's it would be a copper clad dime, so the edges would show as copper. Joe |
