Good for you TomKat! Please keep it up, for your family's sake. I can't tell you how many people in my family have been affected. Well, let me try
My dad is suffering from COPD which is basically emphazema caused by smoking since he was in seventh grade. My uncle on my dad's side had the same disease and had to have a lung transplant only to pass away less than a year later. My uncle on my mom's side now breathes out of his neck because he had larynx cancer caused by drinking and smoking. My other uncle (not related to uncle above) had to have half of his neck removed due to the same thing. He now speaks sorta slurry. My girlfriend's mom just passed away last August from lung cancer and she hasn't smoked in over a decade. The doctors said it was definitely caused by smoking. I sure didn't mean this to turn into a lecture or a public service announcement. So, I do apologize for how much of a downer this post is... Last edited by pris; 04-19-2007 at 06:49 PM. |

I quit a couple of years ago on my 50th birthday. I had smoked since I was a little kid. Gotta tell you it is one of the hardest things I have ever done. I remember when I quit I kept thinking if I can just make it an hour with out one, then if I can just make it a day without one, then if I can just make it week... Soon you will have a month behind you. I am here to tell you it took me about 3 months to really get over the heavy urge to have a smoke. Then it gets better from there on. Hang in there, I can't tell you how much better I feel now. No more coughing and hacking every morning when you get up. Seems like I have so much more energy now. We are pulling for you.

I stopped on Jan 16th, 2007. I held out for 70 days and then picked one up and smoked for 2 weeks. (a couple of beers will do that
). I stopped again this week, on Wednesday, so today is my 3rd day. Tough thing to do, cause I like to smoke, but I gotta quit. After examination, my lungs feel and look clear now, though I've been smoking for 26 yrs, so I should count my blessings and quit while I'm ahead. I used a new drug called Chantix and it really supresses your urge for one. Good luck to you tomkat83 and if you find it difficult doing it cold turkey, look into Chantix (I've did both). Heres a little reading if you want to; Chantix

Put em down after 25 years this past New Year's day and have not had one since. The wife quit after 15 years same day, both cold turkey. We won't give each other the satisfaction of being the first to blink...
Hang in there tomcat, if I did it there is hope for everyone. HJ |

I quit four years ago when my son was born. Decided I wanna be alive to see his kids grow up, but might as well smoke since I've been a Welder for 3yrs. I know since I've quit there's 3 things I can do well taste, smell and breathe. wish you the best of luck.
