Default Teaching Math

Math 1950-2007
Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 & I was digging for my change when I pulled $.08 from my pocket & gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel & 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort & tried to tell her to just give me 2 quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there & cried. That is why I post this:

Teaching of Math in 1950
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching of Math in 1960
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit
of $20.
What do you think of this way of making a living?
Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did
the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes?
(There are no wrong answers.)

Teaching Math In 2006
Un ranchero vende una carretera de madera para $100. El cuesto de la
produccion era $80. Cuantos tortillas Se puede comprar?

Too funny, and too true (which in some ways takes some of the funny away)

Thanks for the post!

Default Electronics Class

in the eighties when i was attending high school i took some upper level electronics classes. the math in some of formulas can get very complicated at times. our first day of class we were told that NO ONE was allowed to use a calculator untill we got to the point where we didnt need them any more. and once a aweek we were given complex a math test. two weex b4 the end of that class every one FINALY ACED the test. yes it was the same test every week. and the last two weex we were aloowed to use calculators...im sad to say that i have forgotten alot of that math. and since college burned as many if not more brain cells than it built, i cant count to 20 unless i take off my shoes.

HAPPY HUNTING ONE AND ALL

This got me to thinking...OH NO!!!! Look out!!!!

Ok I am just average or whatever on smarts!!!...and not having to be a wizard at smarts to find some great finds with my detector!!!!!

But got me to thinking...I am very sad for those children in school with disabilities...that are left behind or passed up with the fast pace of having to take so much in now days to get there education that they are not learning anything!!! What will there future be like when they grow up!!!
My math... welland have been to the school, on several occasions, trying to help a child, with math I couldn't get!!!!... This child was doing a grade level of math, 1 grade up than what the child was in...this child was in the 7th grade....and this math I wouldn't have taken till the 11th grade when I was in school...You cannot imagine the frustration!!!!!

And if I am feeling the frustration...imagine how the child feels!!!!!
