Default I need a backhoe..at nags head nc..bda.????

I was out playing around in Nags head NC just a few hours ago
I went to all metal motion and did the GB to around 40 seemed to work good in dry sand, down in the wet GB of 4 seemed to be good, swaped back over to try a few modes..DE found a 2004 penny at 4"..so all was good and i did several test, I switched over to JE mode pumped the sense up to 90 , max is 99 disc 0 notch 0. I wanted to coin and relic hunt.. this is on dry sand just above the water break.. I got a good zinc 65 tone..I mean a good tone..same as my platinum wedding band gives..this is on the beach..Now mind you lots of old shipwrecks off this coast 1700,1800,1900 stuff..anyways I started digging..I am useing a planters long handle hand shovel from lowes..it has a good scoop..I DIG 40" DEEP stick the big coil in the ground it still reads 7" more..Heck I was worn out Dug for 2 hours..I hit a little water at bottom..What the heck, just in this one spot the ground was super soft....I am not sure whats down there as the tide was comming in and getting to close..I am just wondring if the machine was reading the salt water 40" down I think they might be a heck uv a treasure or something down there..I was picking up a signal about the size of a folgers coffee can lid..4" round..with my pin pointer which is pretty accurate..is it possible..this was dry sand but the waves do break at high tide above this spot. Why would the hole be dry till 40" then dry all around the 4" except where my machine was picking it up..is it possible to go this DEEP..?????..I needed a bachoe..There coulda been a loot down there..I am soo frustrated..It was around 12:00 am in the morning..And I gotta work in the early inland..When I would walk with the machine on, and stick the foot under the salt water in the ocean or over it..its kinda erratic then clears up on the wet sand I just lower the sense a bit in the wet..So i dont think i would be just picking up the water in the 3' wide hole...BDA what do you think you ever Dug down and just found water in just one spot..Could it be some kinda under the beach spring..I was laid down after digging out 1' for my body and stretching my arm from my shoulder all the way out plus the digger is 16" long..so I was around a good 40" deep and my machine when pin pointing at the bottom of the hole read another 7" more..with good tone...Anyone have any clues..I know the F75 is not an ocean machine like the CZ21 but will work in the wet and dry sand.. I try to stay away from the salt water...I guess I'll make a mental note as to location on the beach and go back another time with bigger digging tools...Dag nabbit..james

I've hit on full aluminium cans at 3 feet and chased really big, old iron about the same but 4 feet even my Excal won't hit that hard. Unless you chased a ferrous halo from an engine block, I'd say you were chasing a saltwater ghost, it will happen if you are too sensitive and too close to the salt water table. Your detector will just keep reading a target the size of the hole and it will be strongest in the center of the hole until you hit the water table.
The Excal won't do this because it is programmed specificly for saltwater but most detectors will. That sure was a lot of digging though, I admire your determination.

Cheers,

BDA

bda's right, that was alot of determined digging, wish it would have been a chest of gold or something worth the effort, but hey, you got plenty of exercise!

Noelle and I dug and dug and dug one time and found a penny down about 3 feet in the sand and the MD was still singin'. Turned out to be the salt water...just a fluke that we found a penny.

Thanks folks and BDA..for the info....Yes it was strange to me the way the machine was singing a strong signal..It makes sense...I did have the coil boosted up a bit..But I turned the sense way down to 40 and still got a good signal with the coil stuck 2' in the sand hole..yea minlab i was hoping , considering where i was..It was hard to give up..Thanks I'll Know to reduce the sense a tic next time..i was surprised I even picked something up that DEEP..The water was just starting to seep in at the bottom of the hole..Kinda cool to see the different layers of the sand and shell table..It played a good trick on me for sure..

Will James looks like you learned something on the hunt. Every body is difference , but what I do on deep things like that , I will only dig about 15" and most of the time less with the small coil. Because most likely it will not be a coin , it will be a big piece of junk. Most of the time on small coil about 8" on a coin, large coil about 12" on a coin. But sounds like you had fun.

Thanks I learned something I haven't done any beach hunting but I have stored that bit of knowledge in my memory just in case I get the chance to hit the beach someday.
