Default different search coil

i bought the ace 250 last week. i have no previous metal detector experience. i noticed my finds are under 3 inches. just for grins i buried a quarter at about 5 inches. i tried adjusting the sensitivity and changing modes and scanned from different angles and nothing i did produced a signal. i did some research before i bought the detector and several people reported finding targets at 8 inches. could i be doing something wrong? does anyone have experience with the larger coil? would the larger coil go deeper?

Generally speaking a larger coil will go deeper, but will not separate the trash as well as a smaller one. I would suggest you become more accustomed to the new machine before you purchase another coil. After that make your decision.

Welcome, Tomkat,

Burying a coin is not the best test for depth. As coins remain in the ground, they will effect the ground they reside in over time. This aids in the detectors ability to detect it. Are you in the coin mode? Try relic, I hear its a little deeper. Plus if you have a lot of minerals in your ground, it will also effect the sensitivity of your Ace.

Hightone is right the longer a coin stays in the ground and with the eliments. The metal object or coin in the ground will put out a metallic ora and then the machine see's all these tiny metal atoms and then analize them into an object.
