Default Ace 250 question

We just got an Ace 250 and I initially air tested it in the basement. The air test showed super results. Almost a foot in a mini ball and coin depths were excellent also. With the tab tops and gold rings I have it looked like it will tell the difference between the two also!

Now for the question. The sun came out today and so I headed to the front yard where I recently tried out my CX Plus..... Ooops. The yard has a little trash in it but as I started scanning I would get a good signal (coin) while scanning to the right but no signal scanning to the left on most targets. The sensitivity was at factory defaults so I bumped it back one bar then two but with the same results. Scanning height was the same and so was the scan speed. I'm at a loss as to what is going on. The CX Plus handled the yard with no problems. With it I dug several coins and only one piece of trash which said tab and it was. No problems on L & R scans with the CX Plus.

I hope you Ace 250 pros out there can help me out. Still I think it is a super dectector (considering the air test) for the money.

Thanks,
WS4V

Glad you chose an Ace250! Most if not all the time this happens to me, it is a trash item. I don't believe I have had this happen when it is a coin. This is just my experience, though and I would never say never.

HH - each detector is different, though and the ace has it's own language. This is what I've experienced.

Default Thanks

Thanks Pris that is what I expected. I had gone over the yard with the CX Plus and cleaned out most of the coins so I figured it was trash. I was surprised that there was that much trash there! The CX Plus didn't responde to them at all. It is just really strange that the signals are only apearing when scanning left to right!!! Strange.

I have to agree with Pris. I have the GTAx 550 (next step up from ACE) and it does the same thing. When I get this type of signal it is typically foil.

Default you might also try

changing the angle at which you are swinging on that object. It could also pick it up differently because of the angle (if it's a coin on it's edge or something). OR you could just dig everything.

Be careful that you do not lift the ace at the end of the swing. This can sometimes cause it to give a false reading.

Default Doing it right

Well I'm doing everything right, flat swing, no lifting at the end, etc. I'm from the old school where you didn't have to have motion to discriminate and I must say it was a better world. My old Fisher 555D would go deeper on coins, it would never false except on foil and this technology is now over 20 years old. With the Fisher I have dug Walking Liberty quarters on the beach at 18 inches in descriminate and zero motion.

Although technology has come a long way in target ID and depth detection nothing I have tried of the new generation of detectors has improved target depth or sensitivity. The Fisher paid for itself many times over with thousands of coins, rings, bracelets as well as Civil War mini-balls, buttons, buckles, etc. The machines today are lighter but that is about the only real plus I can find as far as actually finding what we are all looking for.

I guess I am expecting to much from technology but the advancements in all other fields of electronics has leaped ahead so much in those 20 plus years that I feel that metal detectors should have kept up.

When I quit detecting back in the 1980s the motion machines were just becoming popular but in application they couldn't hold a light to the VLF machines of the day. My hunting partner and myself went all over the area to organized hunts were always in the top of the results. When all is said and done mothing much has changed.

I'll keep swinging the Garrett CX-Plus and Ace 250 and see if I can prove myself wrong but at this point I don't expect to have any surprises.

WS4V I use an Ace 250 to salt beach hunt, not exactly what it’s suppose to be good at, and have found enough to pay for a couple more Aces. Anyway I’ve found that if it only reports in one direction try increasing the swing speed and/or changing the angle, not both at the same time, if it still only reports in one direction
One it’s deep trash or two there’s dirt/sand between the coil cover and coil.

If it starts to report in both directions dig, your on the edge of the capability of the detector. or it’s seeing the target at a bad angle.

I’ve also noticed my Ace will false more often with new batteries and ones that are less than half.

WS4V, I've never heard of a fisher 555D do you mean 551D. I think your being to hard on the Ace 250. Maybe your expections are too high maybe you should of bought a Minelab explorer 2 or a Teknetics T2.
I think something else to consider is the trash of the world has become very prominent not only that but there are so many post consumer products out there that the technology of sports drink caps, foil and metallic paper have rapidly increased far faster then metal detector companies can produce metal detectors.

I have a CXIII and the Ace 250. Pris has a point. I have found a coin on edge with that signal, but not that much. Most of the time it is foil or a cut piece of a can. My 250 is stable with it's Belltone and TID to about 5". My CXIII is much more defining in coin identification than the Ace.
