Default I think I'll choose a 250.

Was looking for a backup/extra detector to my DFX. I didn't want one too expensive and for the price and the reviews, it seems that the Ace 250 sounds good.

I'm trying to get the wife into it, so the Ace would be good. (unless there's another one out there comparable.)

This is what I'd like to do with it. I would use it just as a keep in the car, hit a spot for 1/2 hour or so type detector, but if my wife uses it, she stated she would like to use it on the beach.

Now, I live on the Atlantic Ocean (obviously salt). How does the Ace 250 fair in (1) wet sand and/or (2) dry sand. I'm almost sure the wet sand would screw it up, but the dry sand (where most people usually sit/ play volleyball, etc) is where my wife would probably be most of the time.

Hi Don,

The ACE will not work on the beach. I was recently in Florida and I have a GTAx 550, the next step up, and the Salt Water freaked it out as I am sure it would the ACE 250.

The next level of Garrett is the GTP 1350. This unit has Salt Mode to ignore the salt and will work on the beach.

Regards,
Patrick

Thanks Pat

Did that include dry sand. I was in Florida a couple of months ago on North Fort Myers beach, and my brother had a cheap Bounty hunter and it did seem to do ok on the dry part of the sand.

Hi Don,

On dry sand it worked well. There were no false tones at all. I wanted to hit the shore when the tide pulled back (dreaming of gold coins) and when I went to the salt area I had continuous tones.

Ok, excellent. My DFX handles to wet sand pretty well. I'll use that for the shoreline.

Don, get up with "Drver" here on the forum. I think he uses a 250 on the beach on wet sand and does pretty well. He hunts coastal NC.
I believe this is the same member I'm thinking of .

Hey Don. The Ace is OK in some wet salt conditions but not saturated. Dry sand is no problem.

Yeah Tony, I'm waiting on my dads review, but since he's got both the Surf Pro and the 250, there hasn't been a reason for him to take the 250 to the beach. He's still getting used to the Surf Pro.

Bbq yea that’s me, I guess I should add an avatar cause the name I use on other sites was already used here. oh well.

I use an Ace 250 for salt beach hunting. Yea sometimes it gets a little jumpy but...Mine is fitted with the 9X12 coil and always in all metal. In the dry I’ll run 5 bars of sense and 3-4 in the wet. just after a rain it’ll take the 4 but if it’s heavy in salt only 3 sometimes 2. One thing about the Ace is the lower sense doesn’t reduce the depth as much as other detectors would but it does help it to stabilize in mineralized sand. I’ve dug targets around twelve inches in the wet and the dry with it.

BTW the ring count for the year is up to ten, 2-14K, 4-.925, 2 junk and 2 toe and everyone says the Ace is out of it’s element on salt beaches.
