Default question about my new ACE 250

I'm still in the learning process so I'm guessing this will not be my last question I post on here. I received an ACE 250 for Christmas and I took it out for the first time today. With-in minutes of starting I found my first coin...its only a penny but it's a start. In a little over a half hour I found 26 cents in my driveway. My question is my LCD is indicating I've found a dime and it is 4-6" deep but when I start digging I am finding a penny and it's less than an inch deep. It's no big deal but I was wondering if something is wrong.

Hi Pauleyd,

Sometimes you'll find that the ACE will ring up a penny as a dime as they are pretty close in size - and this will change with the coin's orientation in the ground. You can sometimes clear this up by sweeping in several directions over your target. As for the depth, make sure that your coil is flush with the ground. Also, give the pinpoint feature a shot - you'll get a much more accurate depth reading. Good luck.

I have the same detector and its great, when you are pin pointing make sure your coil is on the ground (make sure to buy coil cover). I have had the same thing happen a few times no rhyme or reason but hey a coin is a coin . Congrats on the first find and look forward to your post.

Hey Pauleyd,

There are so many variables in this hobby that I think it's usually best to consider the meter as a guide, moreso than gospel, as to what it is and how deep.

What Joe said about keeping the coil close to the ground could be the cause of it reading deeper than it really is, but in actuallity, it would be reading correctly, if the coil is 2-3 inches above the ground.

Good Luck!

My Prizm III also will confuse dimes with pennies on occasion...just keep throwing them in the clad jar!

I quickly learned to totally ignore the screen & rely more on tone. Occassionally I'll look at the screen, just to see if it was correct once I dig. It usually isn't.
