Default pinpointing with the ace 250

Hey everyone!

I just got my Ace 250 on Thursday and haven't really gotten a chance to use it for an extended period of time. However, I can already tell you that I need help pinpointing with my machine. How can I tell exactly where under my coil an object is? Is it dead center, forward, or back further? I am using the stock 6.5x9 coil, if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated by myself and any potential lawns I'll certainly make swiss cheese out of if I don't get this straight. My test dig wasn't pretty...

Ms Joker uses the 250 and once in awhile I pick it up as well.

I have never tried the stock coil same as yours because I bought the sniper coil and the pinpointing is a breeze..!

I have heard that the center of that coil where there is a notch, is where the sweet spot is.. good luck and keep working it..

Grasshopper,
I checked out the video on Youtube. I'll have to watch that a few more times. Is detuning just another name for pinpointing, or is it something else entirely?
Joker,
I read some other posts about pinpointing. Some are saying what you are, and others are talking about the sweet spot being underneath the top of the innermost coil. I wonder if depth and/or soil type might have anything to do with the different experiences people are having? At any rate, I gotta get to know my machine. Practice makes perfect, right?

Thanks again guys,
Jeffrey

it is a little confusing, but i think it's just a method that some people use to make pinpointing easier. i'm not exactly sure for the ace 250 cause i've never used it. sorry if i'm not much help.

Jeffrey, Allot of folks like the wiggle method shown in the video but I'm not fond of it. The exact sweet spot will depend on what coil your using and with the 250 it'll usually be between the tip of the coil and where the shaft connects, yea with practice you'll zero in pretty fast and don't expect to make surgical digs the first few times out.
For pinpointing I prefer the tip method, it'll work with any detector and with any coil, although it does take more practice and after a while you'll find it to be faster than detuning and pushing the button.
What I do is when you locate a target I'll hold the tip of the coil a little closer to the soil than the heal is and wiggle while moving back away from the target. Note where the target stops reporting, than do the same thing from a slightly different angle. You'll draw an X where the target stops reporting and as they say X marks the spot.

Time spent with the machine and experience help out. I got my Ace 250 around six weeks ago, and with the regular coil was pinpointing fairly well. I would find over 90% of all hit. I got the sniper coil this week, took it for a test run and its dead on. Then again its only like 4.5" so it makes it fairly simple...good luck!
