Default Digging a lot of false signals

I've been digging more empty holes than anything lately with my 250. I read Old Hippies post. Followed all suggestions posted there - batteries, coil cable, etc. Still having the problem. I have heard of hot rocks and the halo effect.

So - 2 questions:

1. How can I tell whether it's either hot rocks (I will tell you that I live in New Jersey, and not sure if we even have hot rocks here.), the halo effect, or something entirely different?

2. When I find a target, the depth reading says one thing - let's say it says 4 inches. When I pinpoint it, the depth is different. Is this a symptom of the same problem?

By the way, I am hunting in playgrounds and parks when this is happening. I want to take it down to the shore soon and play in the sand a little to see if it happens there.

Any help would be great. Thanks all, and HH!

Jeffrey, I am sure that some of the other Ace users will chime in on your problem...I use a whites XLT and am not sure...I know a few times that I have had a reading at lets say 2 inches and then it was deeper..I think that sometimes that does happen...Have you hunted your own yard yet????If not give that a try also...The beach should be a good hunt Too..You might have to stay in the sand a few feet from the water line to get good signals...Happy Hunting and I wish you luck......Buster.....

Hey Buster! Unfortunately, I can't hunt my yard, as I live in a Townhouse and the Association won't allow it.... I can't even plant a freeking garden!

Jeffrey it sound like you have the sense set a bit too high. I'm a beach hunter and on the beach my setting is three to four bars in the dry and two to thee in the wet. Like Buster said though, you may want to keep it out of the water though. The coil is water proof but the control box isn't and the control box is attached to the shaft, so if water gets into the shaft and you raise the coil the water will run up the shaft to the control box...not a good thing.

Oh I used to live in north Hunterdon county and yes there's hot rocks there...in fact some of the glaciers dumped them in many many large pockets...

I went coinshooting today with my 250. I'm still in the learning mode so i'm trying to take every little detail in. I had a lot of what you are describing. A couple of things that i took home from today was the angle of the coin in the ground and the search mode that i used. I was hunting in coin mode so a couple of times i would have a solid hit that read a penny and then i would dig and have no signal. Though I didn't change the mode, i think that with the angle of the target, that i would get a good reading. Then when i dug it and maybe changed the angle, the detector would read it as something other than a coin. I dug several pennies that registered as a dime. Again, I think it's the location and angle of the coin.

You know what they say....practice, practice, practice.

Crbhood you made a great point about the angle. If you have a solid target in both directions of the swing and it's gone after a couple of digs, take a couple more scoops out of the same hole...allot of times the target will show back up.

I usually find a discrepancy between my original depth reading and what it says in pinpoint mode. I find that the pinpoint mode is usually more accurate.
