Default Frustrated W/ New Ace 250

I am frustrated! Had it for a week. Playing in my yard the first day I snagged a 1930 merc dime and a 1940 penny and some foil and junk -- all of this in only 1/4 of my yard.

Wednesday and today I went our in other areas of my yard and get all sorts of coin signals but when I dig I find nothing. (note:the signal does not bounce around when I get one)

Setting: - Jewelry
Sensitivity: middle

When I pinpoint the area to dig I cut and pull back the sod flap and then dig the supposed depth and I find nothing. When I then re-scan the hole and the pile of dirt - nothing!! then I re-pinpoint and the signal moved over a little to the edge of the hole. I re-flap a new section of sod and re-dig and still nothing. Check the piles of sod and dirt and no signal.

No the really frustrating part is when nothing is found and no longer a signal, I then fill the hole in and re-scan and there's a signal again.

Soil is black dirt not strong iron content and no underground wires or pipes!!

ANY IDEAS???!!??!!??!!??

Thanks

Default Welcome Ricch

I have used my 250 for about 3 mos now and have not found a silver coin yet. Congrats on that. As far as the pinpointing goes there are some youtube videos out there that have helped me, along with some members that have posted some great "how to" tips on this site. I do feel you pain when loosing a signal after digging. I recently purchased a Vibraprobe 570. It makes locating finds 100 times quicker. Good luck, keep at it and search this site for ACE 250 pinpointing tips.

Ricch;

First off welcome to TQ. I too own a Ace 250. I have had it for almost three months. I’m still learning. First off, if you are the ‘typical’ guy, you busted open the package, put it together and went out…sans watching the Garret supplied video. Relax, take a deep breath and watch the video. Second as some one previously mentioned, go to youtube and type in ‘ace 250’ and watch as many of the videos as you can stand. I did both of these things in exactly that order. Hell I didn’t even know about the ‘pinpoint’ function till I watched the video. Choose your program mode wisely. For the longest time hunted in the ‘all metal ‘mode. A more experienced local detectorist (and md buissness owner) suggested I try ‘relic’ mode. Don’t ask why, but it seems to do rather well. I just hit a 38 nickel cache last weekend w/four silver nickels. I have also found a working almost new 8gb iPod nano, and a silver chain w/pendant in my first month. The coil the md comes with is like crazy sensitive. I am one of the many who bought the sniper coil also which is awesome and pinpoints like a champ. When you dig a hole, grab a handful of the dirt and wave it in front of the coil. If something is there, it will sound off…This is the “Buster” technique, for those of us with no pin-pointer. If the hole is empty and this technique resulted in no hits, re-scan the hole, and re pinpoint. Don’t expect to cover an acre field in record time with a sniper coil, as a matter of fact, my buddy smoke checked me today with this white prism as I had put on the regular coil and we hit the local high school(super trashy). I had taken my sniper off when we hit a ballfield previous to arriving at the school. So with a little patience, luck and time you’re going to find the good stuff…then again you have already…

Rick

Welcome to TQ and nice job on the silver..!

Sometimes you will get whack signals.. thats the nature of the beast.. You have a highly sensitive instrument and it will react crazy sometimes.

It can be caused by alot of things, a few you already are looking at like the sensivtivity and soil mineralization.

My wife uses the 250 and she says she has the same problem sometimes. I would just keep learning your machine and in time you will become one with it.. good luck!

welcome to TQ .
I am like the other guys practice and learn what it is telling you . I also use a ACE 250 and love mine . They are like humans none are perfect . I found I have to watch the coins because sometimes they will be right at the top in the sod or the roots of the sod and I almost miss them .I keep expecting the coins to be deeper than they are . I got so I pull the sod loose and pass it by the coil to see if the coin is in there if I can't locate it in the hole cause I don't yet have a pinpointer for that job , have had a few fall out while shuffeling the sod around . I have dug very few holes that there wasn't something there , may be a beer can or piece of tin , but usely something close . My pinpointing isn't perfect right now eather but I get close .

Ricch Welcome to TQ

Ummm I'm not sure I have an answer for ya but here's a couple of things to think about.
Setting in Jewelry and get a coin report? Anyway if you were pinpointing with the pinpoint button remember that's it's all metal as long as you have the button pushed in.
The depth meter is only a rough gage, a beer can at a foot will seem like a quarter at six inches.
If the target gets flipped on it's side while digging it can seem to vanish, dig one or two more scoops and check to see if it's in there.

Congrats on the Merc.

Default Hi Rich...

Welcome!
So... i have the ace 250 as well...been using it since the end of april... early may. I've found one 1940 merc dime, two silver rings, one 10k gold bracelet, and a decent pile of clad plus oddities that have the sentimental value and all. I'm with you on the pinpointing issue...it's been a challenge for me too. You're scanning in pinpoint from at least three differant angles, right? And i think you may have your sens up too high. My "coach" noticed me having problems with freaky signals like that and asked me where i had the sens set at. i said four bars and he said to bring 'er down to three and bingo that was it. Never had a prob like that since, 'cept for maybe a couple times..then i brought it down one more to two...worked fine. All i could add to what everyone has said is to try that and see what ya get. Hope ya get it figured out and start making sweet finds once again!!!
