I don't run the ace but I have dug a lot of pulltabs. It seems that the MXT will show them as nickles also. My real pain in the rear is cut up aluminium cans. They drive me nuts. You will get a good hit dig down and find a coin sized piece of aluminium can. Mt Dew seems to be the most prevelant here. ICE

I am a newb too. In my mind trying to ignore trash based on what the detector is telling you is probably why you are missing things. Foil, lead and gold have almost identical inductive properties so trying almost all the machines have a hard time telling gold from foil, pull tab, lead and a nickle. Even when you look at the discrimanation function in various owners manuals you see that gold get's elimanated very easily if you go much past notching out iron. When I was reading the owners manuals for Fisher 1200 series of products and Tesoro's that is one of the first things I noticed was how easily and quickly gold get's discrimanated out so it is not even a brand issue. It has to do with the conductivity of the various materials. So if finding gold rings is a priority you will need to dig a lot of trash or miss a lot of rings.

I read one review of a guy with an Ace 250( I was really interested in one) and he said that after not finding any gold rings he took his wedding band off wich is gold and tested it on the surface of the ground with his coil 2 inch's above the ground. It came up as a nickle on the target id on his ACE 250. He did it several times and each time it came up as a Nickle. So all those Nickles he passed up loking for gold could have been nickles or gold rings inthe ground? My point is that other then zink pennies and iron the discrimanation and target ID functions are about as relaible as a magic 8 ball for accurately telling you what is in the ground! This is why I do not want more then a 4 tone id system. I think it is just a distraction any way and will just make me lazy! I am fat and out shape and need the exercise any ways!!!LOL So consider takeing your wedding ring or the wifes or a girl friends nice jewerly and at the vary least lying it on the surface and seeing what your ACE 250 decides it is. Play with tmodes and various levels of discrimanation and see what you can run and still find the rings. I am guessing based on what I hafve read in owners manuals and in review that once you hit 4 or higher on the discrimanation you are almost never going to find anything made out of gold and I also doubt that anything other then a raw gold nugget will read as gold on your ACE target ID. Since most jewlry is between 10K-24K wich means it has a lot more alloy then it has gold that most machines will not reliably read most rings that are less then 24K as gold they will probably read them as nikles or foil or pull tabs.

I do not know that I would burry anything here is why. Unless you recompact the soil to the same level as the surrounding soil it still will not be an accurate reading becasue anytime you distrub the soil you change how it is going to interact witht he radio waves comeing out of the coil. Difference in density make a huge difference in how it is going to read. So why wate time with all the digging and risking damgeing the ring when you dig it back up. If you just want to see how it behaves with less signal hitting the ring you could easily cover it with a stack of magazines or books and see if it still reads the same. This way you are not haveing to worry about a stone comeing lose from the ring or damgeing it or it getting really dirty etc........

WilliamJB your point about test gardens are correct, that's why old gardens are better than new ones, however even a new garden is more accurate than air testing.

You are probably right I just would not risc someones ring for a test unless it was on the surface. Woman especialy take things like wedding rings and such really seriously!!!
