Garrett Metal Detectors Welcome to the Garrett Metal Detectors Forum. As a pioneer in the hobby metal detecting industry, Charles Garrett created his "green machines." Default Vintage Garretts

Hi! Is anyone using these machines anymore? I prefer the older machines. I have a Garrett Treasure Hunter BFO with large dual coils since 1978 which I use to find large bottle dumps, large relics and the occassional septic tank lid. I also have a Garrett Deepseeker and Groundhog with all the optional coils which I use to find deep targets. For trashy Parks I use a Garrett ADS 7X in a hip mount set-up. In the water, I prefer the Original SeaHunter Mark 1 or the AT4. The Original SeaHunter is very stable, a deepseeker and is non-motion. I have found many deep targets that almost wasn't heard. If in doubt always dig. Although not made any more they are very much in demand especially here on the Gulf Coast. I would like to hear more on their use and stories about using these older machines. Thanks Joe

Hi Joe,
Check out my reply to Leslie (Nova Scotia).
I have used a Freedom II since 1986. I still think it has one of the best discriminators I have ever seen.
Example #1: I got a signal in a very trashy park. The signal wasn't perfect, but It sounded good enough to dig so I cut a plug and pulled out three rusty bottlecaps. I went over the hole and the signal still read good so I dug a little more and pulled out two more bottlecaps, Checking the hole I got no response so I checked the pile of bottlecaps and eventually found a wheat penny inside one of the bottlecaps.
Example #2: I was able to get a good solid signal and pinpoint on a coin that was placed on top of a cement driveway with rebar reinforcement. (Try doing that with most other detectors).
One of my favorite coins was found using this detector with a 10" coil. It was an 1877 Seated Liberty half in XF condition.
