Good to see ya on the boards, and welcome soon to be to the retired Marine dept. Ya know if I was still down there, I'd be out there in a heart beat. But....... Now after you get back to Pa. your new retired assignment is to find us a place to hunt with CW relics. You will be my next door metal detecting buddy, still might be a few hour drive (probibly 6 hours) but its still closer than NC is to me, and I just dont like A.J. enuff to drive all that way lol. HH bud, and find us some gooduns.

Hey Gary,
Sorry I haven't been in touch in a while. Finishing up the migration from PHX to here. I would love to go hunting again. I will give you a call on Friday, most likely later afternoon or early evening. I can meet ya anywhere. Anymore luck in the "Neighborhood"? |

Gary, I have an old copy of the Windsock that has an article that tells of the FIRST amphibious landing supported by Naval gunfire. It took place on Cherry Point right behind the Officers Club.
Union troops were brought down on ships and barges and made their landing there, supported by Naval gunfire, and proceeded North to sieze New Bern to interrupt the Rail Road supply line to Richmond. They camped north of the Slocum river and when they got up the next morning there was a thick fog that severely limited visibility. Before they had advanced 100 yards they came in contact with Confederate troops that were in earth works that had Cavalry in them. The earth works ran for some 3 miles from the Trent River to the rail road. (This is well North of Havelock, when I was looking for them I found them and asked permission search at a home that turned out to be the home of a retired history teacher. She told me of another account of weapons being tossed in the Trent river during the CW. She said she had read of it in the 'Colonial Records' in the New Bern, NC Library.) The Union troops routed the Confederates and had a running battle all the way to New Bern. The Confederate troops crossed then burned the tressel behind them and the Union troops had to wait for the barges to be brought up so they could cross and take the city. That's as close as I can recall the story, maybe I'll find the article and read it again after some 20+ years... Also if you go out Hwy 101 to 9 mile road, you will cross the RR tracks just before you get to 9mile and the house on the left (South) before crossing the tracks was the old Havelock train station. If you follow the tracks North a couple hundred yards or so, there is an old sandstone brick tressel with a brick well on the South side East of the tracks. If you work the woods just East of the tracks going back towards Hwy 101 there will be shallow impressions in the soil that are somewhat in line with each other. These were left by the 49th New York when they pitched their tents there for 9 months during the CW. I had spent the better part of 12 years at Cherry Point and was transferred to El Torro in early 1981. Hope this helps you find something before you leave... SWC Joe Former SSgt USMC |

Gary,
I forgot to mention that if Shorty's Glass Shop is still in business in Havelock, look him up. He has quite a collection of artilery shells and other goodies found in that area from the Civil War. Could be some good leads there. SWC Joe |
