Default New Machine for wife

Bought a Fisher ID Excel for the wife today, at the mding competition. I got a great deal on the machine. I bought it from one of the guys that won it in the raffle. Anyone know much about this model???? We did take it out on the beach. She wanted to start Mding right away. She did get here first find, 1 dime and 3 screw caps... but it sure did make her smile.

Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Tom

Default Help the newbie

My finance and I have been talking about getting in to the hobby for years. We both have recently got raises, and now are blessed with a little disposable income. She wants to hunt for change, jewelry. I want to find meteorites. I NEED some help deciding on a reasonably priced, preferably waterproof easy to operate detector, that I should invest in... Or is there another thread I should go to for help?

$350 would be an optimum price for one, however less is always better. I would love to get two good detectors for around $500. Is it truly worth spending much more? I have seen them on ebay for as low as $55. There even is one with waterproof coil, Hunter Pro that is only $120after S&H. I do want one that is pretty water resistant, there are many old creeks on my property, and a nearby river. I would prefer to go to a store that offers knowledgeable customer service, ebay scares me, at the same time I do not want to be suckered by a salesman

Default starting out detector

I would say a good starting out detector would be the Ace 250 by Garrett.

It comes in about $212.00. It has a TID window, discrimination, Depth indicator, sensitivity & target indication. It seems to be the hottest little detector out at this time. It is really not a beginners machine, many of us are buying them as they are really good as backup machines.

As for waterproof, I would say the only waterproof detectors are the underwater detectors which are in the $700.00 plus range. Of course there a few so called weatherproof detectors out there. But I don't know how much wet weather they can handle.

Default Chuck Has it right .....

..... on the nose.
You can get two Ace 250's for under $500.00, an excellent choice and a great deal.

Now I probably should have mentioned that most all coils are waterproof. I say most all because someone will come up with that one in a thousand that is not.

The control box is the part than needs to be protected from a dunking. However it can be rainproofed with the use of covers. Dunking will need a totally waterproof control box which will put your cost way up over your limit. You Just will have to be extra careful around those creeks.

Don't know anything about Fishers Or wives for that matter, But you can check out Metal Detectors News & reviews. Net. That may help you out or Treasure net forum under Metal detector reviews by Owners. Isn't it amazing that 10 cents & 3 screw caps can bring on something as warm as a smile. It's the simple things in life. Good Luck & HH. Oh Yeah, Congrats on winning thatat the raffle!
