Default My DX-1 experience

I was excited when I received my DX-1 to attach to my DFX. I researched and studied it, but I found after using it for a while now, that, compared to using a hand-held pinpointer, the DX-1 is really is an inefficient item. It seems like it works when it wants to. I've talked to the Sunray people, but I still seem to get the same results.
I'm just inputting my 2 cents in regards to experience with the item. On a scale of 1-10, so far I have to rate this item a 2. It adds weight to the detector, like I said before, it works when it wants to, and it requires more steps prior to searching within the hole.
A handheld pinponter, you just take it out of your pocket and push a button as you're seaarching. If your coil pinpointing is up to par, then the hand held pinpointer will finish the job efficiently.
I'm gonna keep working with the DX-1 and maybe in the future it'll become what I thought it was gonna be, but as of right now it gets a poor grade from me.

Does anyone feel differently about the DX-1. I really would like to rely on this thing, but I'm almost to the point where I'm gonna disconnect it and store it in my closet, unfortunately.

Thanks boobieinpa, I'm hoping that it will become an asset like I wanted it to. I've talked with Ralph about it. I don't have a whole lot of experience with it, but I've tried bumping the DC, regrounding the Dx-1, but still seems to get inaccurate readings or no reading at all. I'll keeping working with it and reading on how to use it in different scenarios. Maybe inexperience is playing the part, but it seems like a straightforward piece of gear to work.
After a while of frustation, I took my handheld pinpointer out and relied on what I knew best.

Don, I have one on my MXT and would not be without it. The DX-1 has never failed me. I wonder if there is maybe a defect in yours. I would ask them to send you another and see if it reacts the same. I have found that mine has helped me find the coins that hide in the side of a hole.,also when I have a pile of dirt on the towel it finds the coins fast.

I have a DX1 on both my MXT and my wife's and would not be without them.
This last weekend I was invited to go metal detecting, and trout fishing, on a friends families property in a very remote section of the state.
I had two guys with me who had never touched a metal detector before. After a brief lesson with my detectors both of them were off and running on their own and I spent the rest of the weekend digging for them. I had a great time just watching them, two kids in a candy store..
One of the first things they mentioned was how easy the DX1 probes made finding things in the hole.
They were also amazed at how small an item it could detect in a dirt pile.

On a side note.... They were happily detecting, digging up all kinds rust and hand forged tools from what was once an old sawmill. I took one of the detectors and started to sweep an area that I just had a feeling about.. I got a hit and called them both over before I started to dig. I dug a little dirt out, pinpointed the spot with the probe and, may have been just lucky, but they both sucked in their breath when there was a flash in the bottom of the hole and I popped out a 1944 silver quarter.

YEah dri-wash, I especially got it for finding the ones that are hiding in the walls. I'm gonna keep playing with it.

Hey Don. Make sure you remove the probe first from the detector and then lock your trigger switch forward. If you keep it in disc then the probe requires motion to work. Let me know how you do.

I agree with you Don, this is my experience with it.
I bought a Sunray DX-1 and realized I had the same problem that someone else had on a different forum where it wouldn't balance out and the monitor on my DFX kept jumping around and they were told to send it back for a repair. So I thought I could do the same, bad mistake, I called Sunray to see if they received it and they told me NO. Also they told me I needed to get a return approval through them before I sent it back and that I should insure it.
Well its been over a month and still no sign of my DX-1. They told me they would call IF it arrived. Well I guess I took a loss on that one. I think next time I would stick with a pinpointer that is totally seperate and that works on its own, own battery etc. When you have to hook something else up to make something work, your bound to have problems...
Now I wish I would have gotten a FREE White's Pinpointer with my DFX!!!

Yeah Tony, what I was doing, or my procedure went like this,

1. Take probe off the clips and hold away it away from anything. Then I would flip the trigger in the forward locking mode, but a lot of times the LCD would show it pegging out at 13.5", so then I would grab hold of the trigger itself and do it manually. Thats when I would put the probe in the hole and search.

I still always carry a handheld pinpointer with me. I've never had a problem with it. I was disappointed or frustrated with the DX-1. I couldn't located anything with the DX-1 unless it was right next to it, hell I could do the same thing with hand-held and not turn on any switches. It was easier. But, I've seen a lot of good reviews about it as you can see from the gentlemen here in this thread, so I'll keep using and tweaking it and after the trial period, I determine whether or not its worth it.

You have to forget the screen. It is inacurate for the probe. The probe is just intended to find the target with more precision in the hole ; not ID it or depth it.
