Default The best inexpensive detector for a beginner

Hello Everyone, I am very anxious to start this hobby; but, like many of you money is very tight. Please share your ideas with me. The detector I end up buying from a suggestion; that person will win my 1st day's finds. {A little incentive never hurts} Thank you, Suzieqcrafts

Default Detector

I started out with a Bounty hunter, and was finally able to upgrade. The price is not bad for a beginner and I found alot of nice coins and relics with it. I think you should keep that first find and frame it!

Default DETECTOR

SUZIE, I would suggest that you look into the TESORO line of detectors. Very light weight detectors, Good prices and very dependable....PAPPY :D :D :D

Good luck in finding your detector Rick.
You will find that while detecting you will forget about everything else...much like drinking...glad I don;t drink..

On another note go to the coin appraisels forum and look at what Poco (TJ) found on his first time detecting! What a great find TJ!

It is now

Rick, why don't you go to Kellyco's website and find yourself a good low cost detector. Then just lay it away and by spring you'll have it paid off

Default Newer technology models.

Rick, both Whites with their Prizm line, and Garret with the new 150 and 250 have introduced new entry level machines. These machines have lots of the 'bells and whistles' of earlier mid level detectors. You might want to look at the new entry levels.

Personally I would look to used mid level machines that are designed to do the type of metal detecting you think you might be interested in persuing.

Relic, coin, water, or gold are the main 'catetgories' that come to mind. If all categories are interesting you will need an all around detector. The Whites MXT is my personal favorite for 'general detecting'. Water detecting has a couple of sub categories, e.g. lake hunting, or salt water beach/sea hunting. None of the 'pure' water machines are really in the low to mid price range though. However, a used Fisher 1280-X with either 8 or 10 inch coil (lake hunting machine) would run somewhere in the 250 to 350 range I think.

Best of luck with whatever your final choice happens to be.

Default hi and welcome

just some advice...im pretty new to the hobby and now own 2 detectors...my first i purchased from a user from another forum site...good deals can be has on used machines..look for people advertising here....mine is a tesoro tiger shark and i payed $450 for it and a whites pinpointer and that included shipping. i saved half that way. i soon decided to upgrade. so i went to my local independant whites dealer and had a 2 hour discussion with him on the different models and what he uses ect. , and he steered me towards a whites mxt to be best suited for my purposes. he did not automatically try to get me to but the most expensive one which i greatly appreciated. also dont get caught up in the MSRP as those numbers are inflated. whites lists the mxt for $800....but without any negoiation at all he priced it to me for $675 tax included..thats a nice savings. i also got another new whites pinpointer and whites headphones for $30 more...so your independant dealers can work with you and save big $$$...at least mine did.....just my opinion

Default I got a minelab musketeer....

I am very pleased with it. Its my third detector and by far the best. Its a great all round beach and relic hunter and I took a chance and bought it used online for $230. My first year taking it out I have found 13 rings some gold some silver one with a diamond chip. About $50 in change and numerous earrings and necklaces and toe rings and even a belly button ring with some blue stones. When you finally choose which one you want then remember the first dozen times your out learn the tones and dig everything. At least twice I've almost passed up a ring because I didn't think it sounded quite right. Also two items in the same hole will give off tones that keep you wondering until its finally out of the ground. The best advice I can give is to read these forums over and over they are a wealth of information and were a tremendous help when I first started. Hope this helps you and as a recommendation if you can't afford a good detector now then save that clad until you can pay it off. A good detector can make a big difference even in place you've already checked. Happy Hunting Jason
