I will be receiving my Vibra Probe 560 in the mail shortly and I was wondering if there is anything I should know. I decided that things would be so much easier with a pinpointer. I figure it should be pretty easy and to the point (pun intended) but figured I would ask.
Can't wait. There is this spot at the park near me that is really bugging me. I dug a hole about 1 foot x 1 foot and nothing, 2nd time I dug it too. Pretty easy though since it was in sand.

Your telling me. Cost nearly as much as my ace 150 cost me. But I have seen videos online with pinpointing and it looks like it sure will help.

Hiya Journey...
This is ONLY MY 2 cents worth on how I Pinpoint with a hand held...I have a Whites Bullseye and I would imagine they ALL work on the same principle...First of all I've been using my Ace250 with a 4 1/2 inch Sniper Coil...When I get a good signal and hear that "Ping" sound, so far 98% of the time its a coin...I first check the depth...then listen for the loudest tone, then pinpoint with the coil, followed by the whole top screen being blackened out by the LCD segments, then she's right on the money...I then dig my plug...I dig down maybe 4 inches or so...flip the plug back, then pinpoint with the coil again to see if the coin is in the plug itself or the hole...If its in the plug, then I use my handheld pinpointer...If its still in the hole, I'll lay a cloth out and put some dug up dirt on the cloth, then check it with the hand held...Normally the coin will be either in the plug, on the cloth or in the hole...I keep searching til that little bugger pops out...and it always does... Boobird... ![]() |

Thank you. Yes that does help. I have just started using the cloth idea. Saw it in a video. Sure makes for easier and neater clean up. I will let everyone know how the pinpointing goes.

The way I pinpoint with my Ace250 is when you get that double bell tone, or like I say, money tone, swing off the target, hit your pinpoint and move across the target, find the loudest spot or highest LCD segments, the center of your target.
Then, while still holding the pinpoint button down over the center of your target, SLOWLY pull the coil back toward you, wait for your segments or tone to JUST begin to drop off, your target should be just under the top of the inner most coil.................... I then use a screw driver to probe for the target and I am usually within an inch of the target................. The place I struggle with this technique is on a pocket dump, that is when I wish I had a pinpointer................ |

Yeah I have the 150, so that is why I am getting the pinpointer.

I'm using a Minelab Explorer II, so pinpointing function is a bit different it sounds with the detector. I switch to pinpoint and pass side to side to find the line on wich the item lies, then rotate 90 degrees and repeat to find the location over the target, generally about 2 square inches.
Depending on depth of the target, I'll often probe the area with my pinpointer to see if I can detect it from the surface. If yes, path forward is easy. If not, I cut a plug with a drywall knife and pop it with a hand shovel. Whenever I do this, I lay out a piece of material I've cut from a pond liner to collect the dirt and the target, should it try to escape! Passing the plug over the coil of my detector, I determine if the target is in the pug or not. If it's in the plug, I start passing the pinpointer over all surfaces to try and find the object. If I can't find it, I begin breaking the plug down by removing a few inches off the bottom and repeating the process until I find the target. If the target was not in the plug, it may be deeper, or it may have been off to the side, so I begin probing the hole with the pinpointer. If I don't find it right away, I begin digging a bit deeper with my hand shovel, passing each handfull of soil over the coil to see if I've recovered the target or not. If I haven't found something at this point, I'll often re-pinpoint with my detector to determine what's up. Sometimes, it's just a very deep target. Sometimes, I've mis-interpreted multiple targets located close together and have dug somewhere between them. Hope this helps. A pinpointer is an invaluable tool. I can't imagine detecting without one since I've gotten one, unless you're on a beach. They save a tremendous amount of time! Good hunting! |
