I have a SSII and have not noticed any faint tones, with or with out headphones. The closest thing I have experienced to this is in ALL METAL/NO MOTION Mode. This mode hums over all metal targets and must be ground balanced. I have noticed some variances in loudness in this mode but not in the other modes that use 3 tone designation sounds for specific targets. In DESCRIMINATION, NOTCH or AUTO NOTCH I seem to either get a tone or not get a tone. There seems to be no variation in volume, only the type of tone dependant on the target ID. This seems true with a Radio Shack BH Landstar equivalent I have as well.
Is this what other BH users have experienced? My point being when people say a faint deep tone, what mode are they in with their detectors, Multi tone discrimination or all-metal no motion? Thanks |

...many discriminating detectors today are Motion/Silent Search Machines. The Tesoro Vaquero, for instance, is silent in discriminate mode, and requires slight/slow motion to operate. You don't have to be in All Metal to get the soft, deep tones.
A good shallow target will "bark" loudly at you, while a good deep target will "whisper" at you. On the deeper targets, once you go into All Metal Pinpoint mode, the volume will usually increase somewhat, as the machine is "seeing deeper", but the tone will still be softer than when on a shallow target. Hope this helps answer your questions. Quote:

with the Tesoro Vaquero in discriminate mode do you get the same pitch tone for a shallow nickel or dime and a quieter same pitch tone for a deep nickel or dime? And the Cortez has target ID on the display, but the same tone for all targets not descriminated out?
The SSII has Three-tone Audio Target Identification- low tone (Iron, Nails & Bottle Caps,Gold & Nickel), med tone (Old & New Pull Tabs, Zinc, Pennies pre 82, Larger Gold Objects) and high tone (Copper, Silver & Brass Copper Pennies ) depending on the the target, but from what I can tell there is no volume change in the tone based on depth. Thanks for the insight Chuck. I am trying to figure If I am missing deeper stuff in my yard due to MD limitations or operator error or both. |

...tell you my friend, that based on the content of your post, and with the machine you are using, in my humble opinion, you are not getting deep enough to get the older coins you desire.
You are correct in your assumption of the tone remaining at the same pitch with the Tesoro machines. There are no multi tones, however, the Tesoro tone is much more accurate as to smoothness, and repeatability than any other machine I have ever used. With the Tesoro, I know whether or not it is diggable, just by the quality, smoothness, and repeatability of the tone. There is no need to have multiple tones to assure me that I should dig. I also know how deep the target is by the volume of the tone...the accuracy of what that machine is telling me, based simply on quality and volume is incredible. I have no need to spend the time or effort trying to discern which tone I'm hearing, or why my Target ID Meter is bouncing around and not locking on. All I have to do is to allow, my #1 Discriminator (my brain) aided by the tones coming through a good set of headphones, make the digging decision for me. Another INCREDIBLE feature is the depth that the Vaquero and the Tejon are capable of.....fantastic! The manual ground balance capability, and the excellence of the ground balance circuitry...make tremendous differences, along with the HOT (High Output Technology), transmitting 20% to 25% more power into the ground than other machines, as to how deep the machine can see. I listen to the smoothness of the sound either loud or a whisper. If I get that smooth signal in both directions then I check my ID.Scratchy, chirpy , briken sounds are usually trash with my detector(whites classic ID SL/with blue max precision coil). Smooth sounds in both directions no matter how loud or soft...I dig.I usually hunt with zero discrimination.
