Default A Strange True Story

Thinking about detecting around my neighbor. There used to be a lawyer living at the end of my block. I heard stories that this lawyer was one of the richest, best and most sucessful lawyers in all Pompano Beach. I do not know exactly when but this was before I came to live in this neighborhood something happened between him and his wife that his wife left him.
After that he went downhill. He started to dress real bad like a homeless, constanyty hanging around at the local bar, and he always slept in his yard. His house was always open and it looked like a real bad mess in there. I think he lived like this for a while.
Also something else. I think the area was supposed to be a bird sanctuary and the city wanted to kick him out of that property but for some reason they could not because he wanted to stay there and I think he had some evidence against either the city or government that they just kind of leave him be.
One day (this happened about 4 years ago) He had an accident because I guess he was cooking something and his whole house got burned down. It even came out in the channel 7 news and from that day I have only seen the guy once more never to be seen. I'm actually a little relieved that he is not around because on a few ocassions since he was right at the end of my street he used to be out at the street roadway right at the turn and I almost hit him a few times. He might have had altzimers or something cause he was a little cooky. Luckily I am a safe driver and saw him before I hit him. I am also talking like 11 pm at night when I almost hit him a few times not during broad daylight.

The big question now is this. Do you think this would be a good place to detect? Lately someone has been taking care of it because the lawn is cut. There is no one to ask permission because it is like a lonely lot and I have no idea who owns it now. Also it is a bit trashy a bit closer to the street since it is right at the end of the block.
I assume since this guy lived in these conditions there must be some coins laying around the yard. I also think he owned that house since the 50s or something like that. I think I will just go there and detect for a bit and if someone tells me something then I will just leave. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? sorry for the long read but just wanted to give you the story behind all this. thanks in advance.

You can go to the local court house. The property records are public. Then you could find out who owns the site.
Asking permission for hunting a site like that is always best in my humble opinion.

I agree, you should do what you can to find the owner and ask. However if all fails then I would consider going. Like you said, if someone says something then apologize and then agree to leave.

Hope you are able to get the green light.

There should at least be a few good pocket spills from the nights spent in the yard

Pursue it.
Check the records and hopefully you'll get to detect it.
Maybe you'll find out who is doing the yard work and maybe that'll help wih getting permission.

Best of luck and let us know what happens.

Doug
