The Ace250 works great in dry sand. I think the difference is that it's not all compacted and hard to dig. When soil becomes hard like cement the coins can hide from us. Maybe since the sand is loose, it makes a difference. Good question, at any rate.

INDY...You may at sometime want to consider getting the 4.5 Sniper Coil for your 250 also..It is one of the best little coils that I have ever come across. A real coin magnet. When I got mine I had intended to use it only up close to chain link fences and under metal bleachers...I haven't taken it off since I put it on.....Sure our Sponsors can help you with it when you get ready.

I did have plans on ordering a sniper coil from one of our sponsers, I just wanted to make sure my ace was working properly first. Thanks for all the replies.
Is it ok to use an alcohol wipe to clean the ace? I'm being parinoid now, but I don't want to mess up my detector.

Hmmmm. Dry in my area also, but I really don't detect in the grass areas during drought conditions as I figure the plugs won't make it. Try expanding your search area if possible - hit more tot lots and hope!

PS: Send rain

Default Hey Indy...

...it looks like you have gotten lot's of god advice, and from the sounds of your last post, you have figured things out a bit.

I would just like to offer the obvious: The depth and sensitivity of any metal detector depends greatly on the electrical conductivity of the target, the soil and any mineralization that's present in the soil. If the soil is bone dry....the detector can loose up to 50% of it's depth capability. Right after a rain or a good watering, (increasing electrical conductivity) a detector can gain as much as 50% of depth. I believe you have just had a spell of the worst weather possible for detecting.

As to the alcohol wipe, it will be fine on the metal connectors, but I would keep it away from any plastic parts. Use just hot or warm water and a little hand soap there, and take care not to have your wiping cloth too wet, so as not to leak any water into the control box.

Happy hunting, and remember, when ever possible, make sure to go out hunting right after a good rain.

I'm concerned that my ace250 is not working right. I have planted in my garden various coins and trash at various depths to test the Ace, funny thing is that my husband just went out and tilled the D%$* thing up, he caught hell for that one At least I won't know where the coins are now. Later I'll be out there to see how the ace performs. I do have a question for all ACE 250 users........its been very dry here, does that effect the ACE?? Last year, we had alot more rain, so I'm just wondering if that could be my problem. And yeah I know, if theres nothing in the ground then I won't find anything. I'm just frustrated, I went from finding clad, old coins and a few relics....to nothing. HELP. When I'm done testing my ace I'll post my results. Thanks for letting me vent.

Thanks Chuck for letting me know how to clean my ace. I went to a park today, wasn't too bad found .97 cents and a "gumball machine" childs ring....man I thought I found a gold ring for a second. I don't think I'm going to do much detecting , until after we get some rain.......Never thought I'd say this, but......Come on RAIN !!!!

Default Digging in dry ground can be discouraging

I have a place where some houses are being torn down and they don't care if I ruin the grass. I also will try playgrounds with wood chips and volleyball courts. Other places to hunt are the swimming holes and beaches out your way. You can get the coil and lower shaft wet but not the main unit. If you want to submerge the unit you will need a water detector.

In dry conditions, I will use a T-handle shovel. When it rains I like to hunt in it because of the increase in conductivity and because I am hardcore!

You could also try some competition hunts.

After cleaning, I use generic ArmorAll wipes on all my equipment and it makes it look like new.

The smaller coil will be excellent for shooting coins in trashy areas.

You have some really respectable finds so far. Keep up the good work! Metal detecting is all about patience even though most of us have little of it. I guess we all like suspense. It's like being a kid again and hunting for treasure!

Keep having fun! That's what life is all about! And, don't ever lose that beautiful smile! Jeff

Default schools?

Hi Indy!

If your detector doent work well in a dry spells sometimes going to looser ground will work good like school play grounds in the woochips and sand. Just an option. Good Luck!
