Here's the technical version............................
Choosing the Proper Headphones for yor Metal Detector |
|
|||
|
Chuck, some of us can not afford to spend $89.00 to $150.00 for headphones!!! In fact, I believe that the only ones who even use headphones (any type) are the more dedicated type! I talk to new users all the time that don't even use them especially on the beach! Now I believe that the dedicated type can be divided into 2 groups. One group will use anything that they can find, as long as it is comfortable and affordable (In the $20.00 to $30.00 range). The other group wants the best that money can buy (money is no object-$90.00 to $150.00 seems ok to this group!) I have no problems with all of the 3 groups (this includes the no headphones group)! I know that headphones should be used so I use what I can afford! No offense, but I have some detectors that did not cost as much as some of these headphones. And at least in my experience and in my area, most of the usually good finds are not very deep in the 5 to 8 inch depth category so any heasdphones can do a proper job!!......Just my nickel.....................Joe

Well, I am not in the business to sell metal detectors or headphones so I am not that intense regarding this issue. I am certainly not trying to start a "Metal Detecting War" either. I am just trying to give the newcomers the benifit of over 30 years of metal detecting experience. In my humble opinion, one does not need to spend a lot of money on a headset to hear the beep..simply get a cheap comfortable headset and then turn up the volume on your detector..that is what the volume adjustment is for. Remember, the headphone is not what is detecting the metal. The detector can only reach down so far and having the best headphones made will not make that detector reach down any deeper. You will never convince me that there is a depth and beep that can only be heard with expensive headphones while using a detector designed for the hobbyist.
Bill, I realize that you are a salesman and that this is your livelyhood but there is no reason for you to become insulting. You know that I am buying a new 1350 and you know that I intend to use my old phones with the new detector. To compare my decison with the tire thing is a bit insulting. I will say one thing in my defense. I have over 30 years metal detecting experience. I am not a salesman, what I am is a Commercial Rated Pilot who has an FAA rating of CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) . The headphones I use in my airplane is less expensive then some of the phones being pushed to metal detecting hobbyists. Please , lets try to be respectful of each other while on the forum. I am here for fun and exchanging ideas. I am not here to sell or promote a businesss. Last edited by I Can Dig It; 06-23-2007 at 12:14 PM. |

This is nothing more than a forum for salesman to sell their items. I am outta here. Just because soemone sells something does not make them an expert. Sometimes when a salesman starts the selling, one needs to use some common sense.....and you don't need an expensive headset to hear that!!

I like this forum and I was going to leave it because I thought the conversation was going sideways. I am sticking around and am apologizing to anyone and everyone who I may have offended. The problem with text is that there is no facial expression or voice inflection and much can be read into or out of a posting. Giving Chuck the benifit of the doubt I will retract what I said about selling. He has every right to be here and if he sells the stuff then I am intelligent enough to understand that he has to be on top of his game to be successful at selling an item and he may know more than me. Soooooo, Chuck, I'm sorry. But...I still think you are wrong
I will continue the dialog but the headphone thing I will leave alone because it just goes round and aroundCarl |

My humble opinion---I too thought that lower priced headphones were all that I needed when I got back into MDing last fall. Since then I have used and repaired 1 set of Calrad and 2 sets of Radio shack headphones.
Had to solder new plugs on the Calrads and 1 set of Radio shacks. the other set of Radio Shack phones has one dead side now. After getting the KillerBees I have hunted some of the same grounds and my finds have increased. The clarity of the signals makes it a lot easier to know when to dig and when not to. Hope my humble opinion helps . Best luck to all, Merf |

I would like to offer a defense for the sponsors and for Chuck in particular since I have dealt with him personally. I had an Ace 250 and in my red clay ground it was making me nuts. I was posting and needed help Chuck said please call him because he might be able to help. In the interim I decided I needed a new detector, which I bought somewhere else. I called Chuck about the Ace and you know what, he helped me even though I did not buy a thing. He and the other sponsors have continued to help me and lots of others here. I know they make a living selling these items but they help anyone who asks no matter what you need be it items for detecting or prayers for you and your family. They are great folks. Just my humble opinion.

Chuck, I have over 36 years of metal detecting experience and have used most brands current and vintage! On Headphones I have used mostly Calrads and similiar costing brands. About 15 to 20 years ago it was popular to get the cheap $9.99 straight cord headsets from Radio Shack and then sodder into it the coiled cord. Very simple and effective. Heck, I remember when the Manufacturers used to always include headphones when you bought a new detector especially the Garrett's. My 1st detector ever was a Garrett Sidewinder which was basicly a junior Hunter and I still have the original grey straight cord headset. These were simple, no volume controls, no coiled cords, no fancy instruction manual!!! Very simple but they got the job done. Now for today I can see the need for the volume control and the coiled cord but ..........................$89.00 to $150.00 for headphones!!!................I don't think so.............................but Chuck (LOL) if you can discount the ratphones down to $29.99.............I'll take a couple!!!................still your internet buddy...............Joe

I'm happy with what I got!!!............................................ ..........Now when are they coming out with the new "DINOSAUR" headphones (LOL).................I'll take a CASE!!!...........or how about the new "heathkit" headphones( also LOL) the ones that come in a shoebox all disassembled and all one needs is a soldering iron and a 2900 page instruction manual!!!! Thanks "Joe Packing for Michigan!"
