Default Lets Brainstorm

I was out Mding today and had a heck of a time finding some of my items in the loose dirt taken from the hole. I was thinking about a better way. I want to a run an idea past you all to see what you think or maybe help me come up with something better. I was thinking of carrying along in my pouch a piece of screen or perforated plastic. It can be placed down next to where you are digging and you put the dirt on it . If you think the target is in the dirt you took out you can swiftly sift back into the hole and with luck recover your target on top of the screen or plastic. Kinda like a sand scoop but more like a mini sift. What do you think before I drill holes in some plastic?
Carl PS: I am not thin skinned so it is okay to say it is a dumb idea Maybe a probe is more practicle??

Hey Carl! Do you by chance have a pinpointer? That might help you out. I have never used a sifter...It sounds like it may work if you can direct the dirt back into the hole. Might be a bit bulky to carry unless it can fold or roll up.

Good idea, though.

Thanks Pris, I was editing the post at the same time you were replying. I was asking about the probe You got me to thinking however about maybe using something flimsy like cloth but much tougher of course. Here in the Northwest some of the dirt is like powder and makes it difficult to see a coin when it comes out, very frustrating. Maybe I will end up buying a probe but maybe my idea isn't so bad..we'll see

I just got the VibraProbe 560 from Chuck and I really like it. It has narrowed the search by a bit. I'm sure the better I am with my MD, the better I'll be with the pinpointer. As long as you have an idea which pile of dirt your target is in, it will find it, for sure.

It's a bit pricey, though, so you might try riggin' something up if you think it may help with your particular soil situation. The places I mainly hunt are maintained and watered, so the soil is clumpy, not dry and dusty. I can imagine sifting through wet soil. I think it would take a LOOOOOONG time.

Let us know what you decide and take photos. It may help others with the same issues. Who knows, you could come up with something that you could sell.

Hey, have you ever seen those plastic sheet cutting boards??

I know it won't work in clumpy soil. Out here where I live there are places that have a lot of volcanic ash mixed in with soil. It is like looking for a dime in a pile of flour Of course I am moving to Florida this winter so all I probably will need there is a sand scoop. I still have all summer though to deal with the ashy soil.

I HAVE AN IDEA FOR YOU!!!!!!!!

Cat litter scoop!!! You can get either a metal one or a plastic one.

It won't be too big and you can put it on a belt.

Heres an idea ! How about a flour sifter ? You could replace the screen with different sized mesh depending on the concistancy of the soil. Also mabey you could convert say a parmasion cheese container lid(the type that can be positioned into different sized holes)into something.
