Default My first question...

I have just spent the last two days hunting an old homesite here in Kentucky. The first day was very frustrating to me since I kept getting strong signals and digging up what looked like pieces of coal. I scratched one of them and it was softer than I thought it would be so I was thinking that it might be coals from an old fire. Do either one of these items detect readily? I am using my White's Prizm V and I usually use it as it powers up and sometimes turn up the sensitivity a bit. The second day I found a double bit axe head and two zinc mason jar tops that were in good shape so I am encouraged. I was just wondering how much effect coal or coals have on our hobby and what if anything can be done. Thanks in advance.

I find a ton of coal on the homesite I hunt. You might want to sift a little though b/c I also find alot of little things with them. Also are your zinc lids lined in milk glass? The ones I find are and I just found my 1st that was not too fragile as to not break apart. I love finding those lids, of course I would love to find money but I will take what I can get.

Yes, both of the tops were zinc and had the milk glass intact. Here is a pi of one of them.

I went out tonight and tested all the coal I came across and my machine didn't beep, now this does not mean it is the same for your machine. I usually find when I find coal and the machine is still chirping I get out my kitty litter sifter(thanks Pris) andmy pinpointer. There is usually something you are not looking for like an overall button or a tiny bullet casing. Keep at it and you will learn your machine before you know it. Hopefully you will be finding gold and silver before you know it.

Any time I'm happy that it's working for you! I didn't know you were trying it out already. That's pretty cool.
