Pappy, I found a ship spike today while water detecting, east coast FL.....I showed it to an old timer from the area and he is pretty sure it is from a ship wreck from the late 1700's right at the spot I was hunting...can you give me any info on ship spikes???????? here are some pictures.....

Wow,
Its in awful good shape to be that old...

Actually,
Some folks still use them, but not much for boat building anymore.
It was still common to see 'work' boats built with them up until they more
or less quit making wooden hulls altogether.

Well,
Some of those hard heads up in New England might still build Lobster boats using them and plank/wooden hulls.

I ain't no expert,
but I'd think that one hasn't been the water more than a year so.
And it probably got bent when someone pulled it out of a board---
the way a regular nail bends when you pull it out with a claw hammer.

Something else-- Its hard to judge the length, but horse shoe nails look like that too.
The are bent on purpose so they curl out of the hoof when you hammer it on.

Default not horse hoe nail...

that is way to big to be a horse shoe nail... cant tail exactly how long it is. but i have seen clydesdale horses shoed and the nail was not that big... the picture with you holding it makes it look like the whole nail is at least as long as your finger. can you take another pic with it in your palm just so we can see the relative size. its a cool find any way about it.

Happy Hunting

It is 7" long and the head is 3/4 square,,,,it was four scoops down in the sand in about 5 ft of waterat low tide. I have searched for it on line and the length matches what was used in that time frame....but maybe I am just hoping for to much.......Thanks for your info.... maybe its from a Clidesdale, from the Budwagon after a Nascar Race....

Default you couldnt even shoe a dinosaur with 7"

it is defanitely a construction nail. no horse alive will take a 7incher in the foot. it bent because it was hammered by one of my ancestors. i bend alot of nails because i hammer like lighting....I NEVER HIT THE SAME PLACE TWICE. but of course thats an out right LIE!!!! BECAUSE I HIT MY THUMB WITH EVERY OTHER SWING OF THE HAMMER

Bill the thumb is better than the mouth. My dad missed the nail, hit a board, and promptly broke part of a tooth.

Default Ship Nail

I don't think you have any type of ship nail.. Appears to be a plain "Square Nail" to me BUT you never can tell....
