I have a question the old timers can probably answer.
I'm out hunting and I have the MD on all metal. I get a signal. It would seem logical that rather than digging up everything metal I could switch the MD over to coin or relic or jewelery. Sounds logical but I now hear that it doesn't work that way, usually. Any feed back on this? Robert R |

Pappy is right, also do you have 2 tones usually dull noise for iron and sweeter medium to higher pitch for something you really want to dig. Hope this helps.

If I am reading the question correctly they are asking that if they get a tone in all metal mode if they switch to another mode will it tell them if it is jewelry or a coin by not responding to the same target. That way they would know what it was before they dig it. IF the tone is in all metal mode then it could be anything but by switching back and forth they can narrow it down to what the object may be by how it reacts or doesn't react in the different modes. Is this correct?

There is something referred to as 'reverse discrimination' and the process goes like this:
You search in 'all metal' mode until you get a signal; Then you switch to 'discriminate' mode to test if the item comes up as one of your "good" signals; Based on the results you decide if you want to dig. This can be an effective way to search a trashy area, but be aware that some detectors will eliminate signals such as nickel along with the iron (ferrous) metals in 'discriminate' mode and this could cause you to ignore or not pickup some valuables (note: Canada and Mexico both have coins that have a nickel outer ring that can be eliminated this way). Using 'reverse discrimination' can be helpful but will depend on the particular model of detector you use and the situation you are searching in. Hope this helps, SWC Joe |
