Well here's what I know.... JC drove up to Cambridge, OH on Friday and got in his hotel about 5 PM. He was very excited to be involved in this hunt and could not sleep much. Got up at about 6 and was at the hunt site at 7. One of the first people He met there was our own BillPA who gave him a new pouch to use for his finds. This is JC's impression of the 1st day........

Man, this is very different from what we normally do with our detectors. Everyone of the folks I met there was great. They were all eager to teach me what they could since I had never done anything like this. I was involved in 4 of the 7 hunts that day. They are called seeded hunts and the guys or gals that run it plant silver coins in the fields for us to find. Sounds easy but when you line up on the edge of the field and the whistle is blown it gets crazy. I learned a lot about my detector and coin retrieval this weekend.

On my first hunt I did very well. I found 11 silver coins which was pretty average. I felt really good but wondered how I did so well. The rest of the hunts brought me back to reality. I can usually find about 1/4 of the average MD'er out there. Not bad but I have a lot to learn.

Each hunt is like a competition and after about 5 mins most coins have been found. I ended up for my two days efforts bringing home about 72 silver coins. 2 of them where Kennedy halves which I like but are only 40% silver. The coins are nice but I really got a lot more from this experience than I expected. I wanted to meet other detectorists. I did: over a hundred. I wanted to experience this type of hunt. It is awesome but might not be for everyone. And I ended up learning a whole lot more about my detector than I would have even imagined.

A person could get addicted to these type of events. I do plan on attending more of them but I am going to mainly concentrate on what we usually talk about here. the coin and relic hunting.

The first pic is me trying to figure out was I was doing. The 2nd show many of the others in the field.

Wow. sounds like you did real good. 72 silver coins. I can't imagine how that would go with so many hunters. Who furnishes the coins? How deep? Anyone stood out amoung the hunters? enough questions for now. LOL

Thanks everyone...... Yes, this was one experience I am glad I had. Most of my silver was in the form of Rossevelt and Liberty dimes and compared to the other 100 hunters was not a very good haul the average/experienced hunter found between 200 and 300 silver coins. In most hunts like this the coins come from the entry fees and some from donations. They are usually only buried about 1 to 2 inches deep. You have to know your detector and be good at pinpointing quickly with it. Even though the coin is only an inch or so down you must retrieve it quickly and this is where I need to work. Yes Kentfb, there were folks there that did and do usually fare the best but I am going to practice if I go again. I don't remember the names of the best ones but have pictures of the winners. There are many hunts like this around. A lot of them are put on by smaller clubs and don't get as much exposure on the internet.
