Default High density target areas -- what's your approach?

I've just been wondering what others do when they hit a new site that has so much stuff strewn about that it's hard to make much progress/cover much ground without digging the whole darn place up?

I've run into a few of these high-traffic areas that have lots and lots of coins -- mostly pennies, of course -- strewn about. I hate digging so much of the grass up in one place, so I often revert to looking for the likely higher-value coins.

Of course, over time (years), I expect I'll dig all the signals, but for now, I just sort of "cherry pick". Normally, I tune in on what might be quarters/dimes/silver, or any "unusual" signals, trying to leave behind the pennies for now. I know I'm leaving behind some likely good targets, but I just won't make the place look like a prairie dog town, either.

What does everyone else do in these situations? I'd love to just roll up a sod carpet for a morning and go to town!

You mentioned what I would do. Just eliminate the lower type coins, Nickles - Pennies, and go for the higher denominations.....for now. In places of high traffic, your penny count is going to be greater than the rest. My advice... go for the " GOODS ", and get the " LEFTOVERS " later.

Same here Doug. On a nice landscaped yard I cherry pick just waiting for the right time to dig more, like when work is being done (adding drainage, putting in new lines, etc.).

There is a ball park in the town that I grew up in that a few areas of it are just the way you explained. You can't swing the coil without getting one or more coin hits each time. I dig each target. What I do since I still go by it often is I'll detect one day and then let it go for a few weeks, at least. This gives the grass that was dug time to reroot and any other sign that I may have left behind will be gone. That's the way I have been preventing the place from looking like a bunch of gophers live there.

Yea what most folks have already said! I also have a nice looking park I don't want to look like I used a rear tined tiller to MD with. Kinda like mark v said, I hit one spot then next trip I goto another. Kinda like "Well it's Tuesday time to go south of the third bench." LOL

Good luck!
