Default What is so apecial about a wheat penny?

I get the impression wheat pennies are difficult to find? Are they rare? (Sorry, the title should have said 'What is so special about a wheat penny?)'.

Regards,

Colin (from England)

Hi Colin, glad you posted and since your in England you have thousands of years of artifacts, relics, coins to be found. Our history here in the U.S. is very new compared to yours. Most of the time when I mention finding a wheatie it is because I am testing a new machine or coil. But it was not all that long ago that wheat pennies were a common sight in our everyday pocket change, but it isn't anymore. So I am very happy to find wheaties and some of them are down right valuable. Ok I hope this helps to understand when one finds a wheatie, especially if they are new to the hobby. God Bless Colin and I hope you find many more treasures out your way.

I also think we like to find wheat pennies because they give you a timeline. These pennies let us know a property was inhabited at least mid-century and possibly even longer. That way there is hopes of buffalo nickels and mercury dimes and silver quarters, silver roosevelt dimes, etc.

I don't have anything to add except welcome to TQ.

On the wheat cents, I agree with the previous posts.

The wheat penny stopped production in 1958, (the year after I was born). I have not found one yet. Here in the states it lets us (we hope) know we are in a good spot. I am looking foward to finding my 1st one, Beale.
