Default Old junkyard?

I have been exploring the depths of my memory and coming up with a list of potential sites to go md'ing, as I was a surveyor for the county government and came across some unusual sites far away from the beaten path.

Do you think a possible former junkyard would be a good place to hunt? I'm not quite 100% positive it was a junkyard, but there are a few remnants of some (I'm guessing years)1930's up to 1950's vehicles there. Or would there be too much trash and scrap metal around to interfere with finding anything good?

I would guess that old junkyards would be good, but there would be whole lot of trash (nuts, bolts, bits of metal and alot more).

Like you said, you're not sure it was a junkyard, so it's at least worth a shot.

I remember we would get parts from a local junkyard and would have to remove them ourselves. Just thinking about people laying under a car spilling from their pockets or rings falling slipping off of greasy fingers.

True, but hopefully I won't have to go UNDER the rust-piles to find anything good!

Any place is worth the shot of checking out. You have to know your machine really good for a junkyard. Your knees will get sore and you machine is going to go off at every swing. If you know your machine you will know a good sound. Let us know how it went.

Good luck...you'll probably find a lot of coins just by pulling out the seats from the cars!

You will probably find a whole lot of trash before you find treasure but it is worth checking out. Good Luck

Default old junk yards are work

I know for a fact !!!
i own a 20 acre tract that was a junk yard from 1901 to 1967.
The best solution is to get a skid steer / make a screen 6' x 4' by 1' deep.
1/4 " mesh screen
sit on top of concrete blocks 3 1/2' off ground..
Dig the top 1/2' foot of soil off and dump in screen, sift out the dirt and sort out the metals into proper piles. next dig off another 6" and do it all over again.
In the old days they used to just stack the cars up and burn them , then cut the metal up for scrap. Thats why there i so much melted stuff
i have found a lot of alu.,copper, brass, silver coins, pennys, nickels ,1 burned gold coin, iron, etc. a lot of old hood emblems from old cars and trucks
At the price of scrap metals today you can make wages if ya want to go to all the work. i figure at the rate i'm going i should be done with this project in 3-4 years.
let me know how you are doing, it fun and profitable but it's a lot of work also
george

That would be great and all, but the site is pretty far from the road, way off the beaten path and getting any kind of equipment there would be impossible. About the biggest thing I could get there would be a dirtbike or a 4-wheeler. But it is a place that I will be checking out once I get a detector.
