Default try this

try cutting a horseshoe shape and flip the plug over leaving one side connected ,that was all the roots are not cut and the grass will some what stay green ! kkfry

When its real dry I'll hit the woods or the beach. When I do cut, its usually a horseshoe and I just bend it back. As said though, when its dry its tough. If your really good at pin pointing your target, you may want to try using a knife and cut an x in the grass over the target, use a probe and work the coin to the surface.(easier said than done) If I'm hunting or about to hunt a prime site I 'll wait till the fall when the ground is nice and damp so there won't be any dark patches. Just a thought.
