I'm a little leery of snakes myself...my nephew got bitten by a baby copperhead a couple of months ago and his foot turned black. He was in incredible pain for ages. Certainly not something to risk if you don't have to. Something I didn't know about snakes: getting bitten by a baby is far more dangerous than getting bitten by an adult. The adult has learned to "bite and release", therefore leaving less venom in the system; but a baby hasn't learned to release yet so just keeps pumping venom in. OUCH!

Snakes aren't generally going to be a problem unless you're hunting metiorites or some place in the longer grass, etc. If you are doing that, be sure to either don't use headphones, or use the one ear variety or some that allow you to still hear the ambient noises. Rattlers out here in the west let you know when they're around usually long before you get too close. Swinging a detector over one could really agitate him baddly, so use caution and common sense and you'll be fine.

Dry bites are actually common from venemous snakes in a defense situation. Often, the hospital won't even give antivenom right away, making sure the bite wasn't dry as the antivenom can be as bad as the bite in many cases.

Snakes are scared of you. You won't get bit unless you get too close or step on them. Just pay attention where you are going to put you foot if you are in a high snake area. No need to kill them, just walk around them.

Default snakes > &#$@*

I have my 38 revolver loaded with the second & third chambers shot and the next three solid bullets. the first chamber I carry empty.

I figure if they are that close you don't need a canon.

Two weeks ago Boobie, KKFry and I were hunting an old cemetary. I proceeded to dig a plug. I cut across the top, right side & bottum. I used my Lesche to flip the plug over and a 6 foot big A$$ snake come out of the hole.

My reflexes caused me to chop its head off with out worrying about the preserving of the wild life crap.

It sure scared the daylights out of me. I than measued it and it was about 9 inches long and pretting thin. I guess the sunlight shrunk it a bit.

Sure looked 6 ft long when it come out of that plug. It must have been settling down for its winter nap.

PS: I really hate & can not stand snakes. I even tried to approach one at a snake show once just to try and touch it and maybe get over my phobia, I could not even get within 6 feet of it. If I see one while detecting I freeze, than I back off and let them be unless they are too darn close.
