This is a touchy question, but I thought it worth asking.I was wondering if anyone has hunted near or around an old cemetery? I,m always thinking about new places to hunt, and I passed a very old one in my travels recently.I was raised the old fashion way ,and my gut says NO it would be disrespectful even hunting the gate or walkways. How do you all feel ?

Hey, there was a post a while back with this very question. I'll take a look and see if I can find it and I'll post the link here.
Cemetaries... there ya go! ![]()

I'm new to this, and thanks for asking the question (and posting the link to the older thread that goes into more detail) - I grew up helping my mom do the family genealogy, going to old, OLD graveyards, and I feel comfortable in them. But it would feel kinda wrong to dig around out there. I prefer to listen to a soft wind and think of the good ol' generations before mine - the reason i'm here today.

You know I look at it like this... The only part of a Cemetery you should hunt "With Permission" would be the area's that are Off the beaten path and where Family members couldn't see you with a Metal Detector..
I have hunted on the Property of a large cemetery in Pittsburgh just recently... BUT I was in a Vacant field with woods separating me from being noticed by "Anyone" But I was in the cemetery and on their property "With Permission"

As in any area - respect for the land, respect for the property owners - and in this case respect for the departed...I think gate areas, walk ways and peripheral areas are fine to hunt...but wouldn't want to even give anyone the impression that I was digging in or around an actual grave....be prepared to be yelled at and some name calling (even with permission to hunt - it's understandably a touchy subject).

There is an old cemetery very near my home but it is on a well traveled road. I have been reluctant to go anywhere near it with my MD because of all the traffic and the houses near by. There are alot of well intentioned people out there that might want to have someone come check me out. I'd rather not have the attention. I have thought about going to our local
library and seeing if they have a map with location of the ones here in Indiana. RR |
