Mine has probably about paid for itself at this point, but not with coins. I'd have to consider the value of all the gold and silver (and actually want to part with it) -- the coins only add up to a few hundred $$ at this point (about 1.5 years). That's a pretty good rate of payoff considering my detector is one of the most expensive on the market
! But, it's the enjoyment it gives me that really pays off! I'm not really in this to make money. If I was, I'd be in trouble!!!![]()

I haven't started counting my finds until I joined TQ but I would have to say the dollar amount of my finds, selling detectors when buying new ones, and coins and prizes from treasure hunts I've been to are much higher than the costs of my detectors. I think I still paid for them even when considering the cost of motels, entry fees and chances bought to attend the treasure hunts.
Actually I really didn't pay for much out of my finds, I've sold nothing that I've found yet, some I plan to one of these days and some of the jewelry my wife laid claim to. I do spend all the clad that's clean enough and the rest is in my "one of these days to tumble pile" So to all you new detectorists, you may want to keep a picture inventory of your finds with values or sold prices (If you're selling them) then when this question comes up again, you won't have to give the wishy-washy answer I just did ![]()

![]() I have about $35.00 in clad and a couple of pieces of silver (a ring and a chunky earring). I've put about $400 into the hobby, including my Ace250, sand scoops, VibraProb 560, Fiskars Trowel and Sheath, tool belt thingy... I figure I'm set and should not have to put too much into it in the future, BUT, I absolutely LOVE this hobby. I didn't even expect that I would be meeting totally cool people, too! I've normally been a loner, so I thought that dressing up with a funny lookin' tool belt and gloves, swingin' a pole around with earphones on would not be the way to meet new friends. Boy was I wrong.Anyway, I have no doubt that it will pay for itself monetarily, but the friends I've met are priceless. ![]()
