The instructions that came with the tumbler said to only use enough water to cover the items - so that's what I did. As for the grinding powder - it mentioned no specific amount to use - in both cases, I used about a teaspoon full. These powders seem especially effective, so I think I could have used less (maybe 1/2 tsp).
