I guess I should have posted the particulars. This is the whites xl pro I was looking for.I found one,and it came with a 9.5 stock. The fellar I got it from recomended a 5.3 bullseye coil to make it better where debris is present.I,m used to swinging a 9 1/2 and wondered what differences I could expect dropping down to a 5.3

You will lose some depth but will be able to find coins between the junk. They work great. I actually have been using my DD coil a lot. Its kind of neat when you go back to a junky area you hunted before and now are able to find more coins. You will have to overlap your swings more, which helped me to slow down and be more thorough when I hunt. Good luck and use it and get to know it. It will serve you well.

I think I would definitely use a smaller coil if the conditions were such that you'd be missing good targets among the trash with a larger coil. I don't have a White's but I don't really thing there's a big difference in depth as much as area cover in a sweep, at least I haven't noticed it.

I have a 5", 8" and standard 10" for my Explorer and only a few times did I have the need for the 5", I know the 8" doesn't seem like much of a size difference from the 10", but it's amazing how much smaller it looks next to the 10" and the 5" is really tiny.

What you could always do is plant a coin in your yard and see the difference for yourself. Maybe also, plant some junk with a coin and see what that tells you. Just a thought.

As already posted, the larger one will let you see more dirt in a given swing than the small one will. To give you an idea of how much...with an 8" coil, your detector is viewing 'approximately' 1 gallon of dirt underneath it. Just picture a plastic gallon of milk underneath your coil. Now when you switch to a 10.5" coil, your detector is looking at 'approximately' 7 gallons of dirt at one time! So I would guess a 5" coil would be closer to a quart.
(Taken from Tom Dankowski - Designer of the Fisher CZ-3D)

Now that said if you are in a trashy area where you may have say a dime at 8" down, and 4" to the left of it you have a pulltab at 2". The 10" coil will only see the pulltab. With the 8" coil, you might be able with carefull sweeping, see the two items. But, with the 5" coil, you will be able to lock on to the dime and seperately lock on to the pulltab as two seperate items.

When I go out to the beach and I want to cover a large area quickly...10" coil all the way. When I am at an old homesite with lots of co-mingled iron and possibly good coins...8" coil first to get the easy ones, then go over the same area with the 5" to snipe out the remaining goodies. I have done experiments where I will go over a section of ground with the 10" coil and only get junk signals. Then go back over it with the 5" coil, and good things start to pop out inbetween the iron. But in the interest of time when at a site, I like to usually hit it with the 8" first to get the easy ones, then when I have a lot more time, I go back through with the 5".

If you are at a park with a lot of trash...5" coil and mentally grid out the area. Hope this helps, sorry if it seems so long!

Best of luck,

ECACE
