Default OLd Homesite strategies

I am going to be hunting an old home farm site where nothing is left that dates from about the early 1800's. The site has an old kitchen that was primarily used by slaves to cook family meals but was turned into a blacksmith shop in later years. There are no visible boundries of where rooms were located except for what I learned from my great great cousin who is well into his nineties. My main concern is how to hunt given that there is probably alot of iron from not only farm impliments but from the blacksmith shop as well. I have a Tejon and was wondering whether or not to put my discrimination at above iron and check tagets with my alternate descrimination and is there a certain pattern that will help me cover the entire area for silver goodies as well as WBTS items.

I would dig all signals on this. Also you could grid the area when you hunt. Start hunting at one angle then hit it again from another angle to make sure you get everything. Then go over it all again. No site is ever really hunted out. You might think you have everything and then you go back and find more. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find...Buster,.....

It sounds like a very promising site. If you dig everything you will be at it a while. Make small squares of areas say 20x20 and work that area until you are sure no other hits left. Then move on to another just the same.

Good luck, Beale.

If you have time to search the site, a lot of people do as the other members have suggested above. They clean out the junk first from an area then really search it again thoroughly. This seems to produce the best results from what I have seen. Good luck and let us know how you make out!

I would definately hunt in all metal and dig every signal. A site like this could have lots of really cool relics as well as coins. It will be slow going but in the long run its worth it. Good luck and look forward to your posts of finding. HH!

Sounds like a great place I am not sure about settings on your detector but some of those iron tools are of value. you never know what your gonna find. I would dig everything. Some times when i am in high trash areas i use the coin and jewelry setting first then switch to just coin with more discriminating and go over each area twice. good luck

Dig it all. Get all the junk and iron out of the way and hit it again over and over. Grid it and hit it from every angle. Good Luck.

One strategy is to go over the site fairly quickly with the discrim set high and see if there are any coins about. Then you can turn it down and dig some artifacs. Either way have fun with that great location. JC
