Default The Chitlun Strut

Hello all, I just wanted to share with you a holiday tradition here in Salley,SC.. the Chitlun Strut was started in the November of 1966 and this year is the 42 annual strut. The Chitlun Strut is always held the Saturday after Thankgiving. People come from all over the country. Alot of folks camp here in town the whole week. For those of you who might say what is a chitlun. Well it is in the webster dictionary as chitterling. HOG GUT. Intestine. Over three feet long cleaned, Cut, fried, or boiled. How do they smell? raunchy! How do they taste?, Well do to the fact I am a yankee, I will not eat them so I truly can't tell you. Yes it is all about hog here in Salley. The parade was very nice. I still can not get used to the band playing dixie. I am used to yankee doodle funny how little things like that stay with you. The festivities begin with a beauty pagent two weeks before, we of course need a Chitlun Queen. Last night was the Chitlun Idol contest. Which was fabulous we have some great talent. Other Festivities include a carnival, live music, craft fair -fleamarket, lots of food boths, a strut(dance contest), And the hog calling contest. My son Timmy is the reigning champion jr hog caller and yes he won again today. It was a very fun day but the best part of bussing 8-10 thousand people into a small town is.......... I get to MD this village tomorrow. I will be in hog heaven.

#1 The john deer tractor was in the parade.
#2 My sons were on the Salley Baptist Church Youth float.
#3 Miss piggy
#4 The taxidermy Booth I just loved the diplays.
#5 My Youngest son Timmy with his trophy.

Looks like a great time! I actually like Chitlens ( NC way of saying it). I grew up eating them, they do stink when cooking though.

Good luck detecting tommorow, Beale.

Congrats on having a good time at the Strut. And good luck cleaning up the " Goodies " after its over. I've had Chitluns and Do Not care for them again.

Hey Gordie, your welcome to come up to my area for this one.....

Small town of Tiro, not far from me has a festival every year. "Tiro Testicle Festival ". Its on a Friday night in the spring. Folks come from far around to eat Mountain Oysters...

They gobbled up 600 pounds this past Spring and set a new record. Shooting for 800 pounds next year. I have tried them too, and Do Not like them. I went to the festival once and all I can say is,,,, the Pizza was good.

my dear Ironclad Thank you sooo much for the invite but that is something these teeth are not biting into. It truly amazes me that people actually eat some of the stuff they do. Too funny . HH

GG, down here in Florida we have the posum festival every year. That's in Warsoal florida. They have a king and queen also. They do the parade and they have the fair. They have posum to eat in stew form and they celebrate. We have gone to this a few years that we have been back in Florida. It's quite fun. It's not as fun as eating pig intestines or oysters from a bull, but it's a grand time..Same fun different state....Buster...

Thanks for the photo's CC. This way I got to see some of it anyway. I read all about the great history of this event and if I do get there I will try chitlins. JC

GG - sounds like a GREAT time - but this 'ol Texas boy ain't eatin chitlins (or mountain oysters, either)! However, I am quite fond of rattlesnake and gator tail!

I'm planning to cook up a mess of chili for out TQ hunt this coming fall - but y'all can relax - I'll just use good 'ol Texas beef (if I can find Texas beef in Pennsylvania!)
