That river will be loaded with trash like fishing hooks, sinkers, beer cans, and all kinds of other junk so it willl require a greal of patience.

The American river is a very rocky one and you'll probably have to use a small coil so you can get it between the rocks, boulders, etc. Otherwise you might not find much if all you have is a big coil.

The other thing to think about is if the gold large enough to be detectable, it will be be trying to work it's way down to bedrock- perhaps out of the range of your detector.(along with the other junk)

Thanks Tinman....What do you do with your machine while digging.

Goldfinger I never thought about the fishing trash.I supppose I would be better off in a remote site. And as far as coils go the detectors I looked at have 8'' weighted coils.I thought it would be a blast to snorkel with a detector.I thought about wading with my whites GM3 but every time I find a target I have no where to put my machine.I was thinking about going up river from the Iowa hill bridge where dredgeing is not allowed.

Best regards Tom

I don't think it will make any difference whether you detect a remote area or not. The yearly floods will scatter it all up and down the river. A lot of people (sadly) also use the rivers as a dumping ground for just about anything.

Good luck

Steve
