Default Might Be Either A Good Or Bad Idea

There is a canal on my way to work where there are houses on one side and the main street on the other side. (you know the ones i'm talking about dirtyish water ones). Well it seems that there are some cranes taking dirt out to the side and it seems that the plan is to completely drain it and put something else there. They are in early process of that.

I stopped today to take a first look and the dirt they pulled up was very trashy and there was water still running like about 1 foot. Then I continued to go and stopped again. This time there was dirt pulled up and there was like about 2-3 inches of water still flowing. I felt like it could be a good area to detect. If I did, I will wear boots and gloves cause I know it is dirty. Any ideas or suggestions. Are places like that usually good to detect? Has anyone ever detected a drained canal? let me know. Thanks.

I know the canals you speak of, and honestly you may end up with just a bunch of trash. How old is the neighborhood? How old is the canal? I think it could be an interesting reflection on the trash that lies right behind our homes, but I wouldn't have my hopes up... maybe I'm pessimistic tho.

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

Might be worth a try if you can do it safely. Go for it. JC

Wink Canal Cleanup

I suppose as long as it's not like the Love Canal of the early 70's, and it's not an EPA superfund hazardous waste cleanup project. But then again I might be a little too cynical. Do they say why they are filling it in, or cleaning it up?

You never know what you will find, poptops, beer cans, screw caps, bottles, broken glass or what ever. They were good spots to get rid of stuff. Maybe even a gun. I remember when I was a kid, back in the 50's and early 60's we would play hard and fish in those canals. I probably lost a few coins on the banks of them, along with a knife or two.
Gloves are a must.
GL with it.

I think it is worth the effort myself. Just be careful, and take your time, Beale.

I think it would be worth a try, just be careful and watch out for those creepy crawlers.

Our daughter lived in Ft. Lauderdale before moving to WPB and had a canal in their back yard, would occasionally hear of gators in it.

Hi smartfox,
I would be more interested in the paths along the canal. Older canals especially were good paths for travelers on foot. Good luck!
