I usually start out on a new sight digging most targets and definitely the deeper ones. If I'm getting alot of the same type of pull tabs, I lightly discriminate those particular ones out.

Keep in mind there's so many kinds of pull tabs, and they're in all kinds of condition, so by notching out all pull tabs, you'll most likely miss a ring if you go over it.

If an area is very trashy, I'll sometimes discriminate out foil also and I know that I risk missing fine chains.

Shortgrass about digging a penny or dime that shows an inch on depth, if it isn't in the first couple of inches, is very probably a larger target that's deeper. I can usually tell by the tone and also when pinpointing the tone won't drop off as quick.

hummmm, you a bit more advanced than me at this point. About the only thing I can tell about tones are the sharpness and clearity of some tones over others. I have the MXt and it is a lil funky- It has good coverage and lets you know that there a target near by for sure but, I havent notice tone differences in differnt targets, like the bounty hunter i had; that whistled differnt tone pitches per target.
The Drop offs your speaking off, I have picked up on either, for the most part. I can make a quarter sounded funny at the end of the range. However as soon as I open the hole, it reads differnt if it was deep. again the hunting ground/conditions does change the depth which i dig. parks and school i hardly ever go below 5in because of the old clay base underneath.

I getting the hang of it, I enjoy not having to use my spade anymore..
