Default Determining a ring's worth

Ok, so I've been trying to see what I can get for the Tiffany ring I found a while back, but I'm having a hard time finding a reliable source... I'm not even sure what the best way to go about it would be...

I'm not sure what it weighs - however, it is a gold/platinum combination ring, so I'm not sure how you would determine it that way...

Anyway, I'm just frustrated - I thought I had something really valuable, and it just seems like it's not worth all that much, and I was kindof relying on it to get me another detector...

Any help is appreciated...

The best I could suggest is to figure the value of the metal first. Say it is 50% plat and 50% 14K. You need to know the total weight in grams. Take that and divide it by 2.

14K is 14/24ths or 58.5% gold. The platinum purity is probably indicated by the hallmark, maybe 95%.

Take the current price of gold, divide it by 24 and multiply that by 14. That's your approximate gold value. If the platinum is 95%, take the current price per ounce, divide that by 28 and multiply that by the approximate weight in grams (50% of the total weight). subtract 5% and you have an estimated platinum value.

Worked items command more than just the metal value but only a jeweler could give you a certified appraisal.

This may not be quite in the ballpark but it will give you an idea.

Default tiffany.com

Google tiffany and co. and check out their rings and prices.

The yellow gold is 18 Kt and the Platinum is the other. What a great find! Very happy for you.

I've been looking at the same issue with many of my finds. I've been looking into taking many of the older, more ornate pieces to an estate jeweler, there are a few around here. I suspect they'd give a reasonable price, given that they too intend to make a profit off of the deal. The other option I've been toying with is just keeping all my gold and silver and then going in and having a jeweler craft me a custom piece -- letting them keep the extra metal to pay for the deal... I know the wife would love this someday...

I weighed the ring on the postage meter, and I got .3 ounces, which translates into 8.50 grams... if I split the weight 50/50, that makes 4.25 grams per metal...

Gold is showing at 833/oz., and platinum is 1528/oz...

I never was that good at math, so if someone would like to maybe translate all that, I would appreciate it!

Default Ring

The FIRST thing that you need to do is take it to a Jewler and have it weighed and appraised. After that you may want to consider placing it at auction on some of the auction sites on the web that specifically deal in jewelry. Another thought is to advertise it in the local paper and see if you can sell it. You can offer it in some of the FREE ADS in the papers near you also.

The link sanddigger gave appears to be your ring! Tiffany wants $1400 for it, you ought to be able to get 1k.

Thanks, Pappy! (I thought you was mad at me or somethin' = _ ain't heard from ya in a loooong time - but I looked at your blogs and I can see why! Congrats!)

I stretched my brain around the math and I came up with a solution - tell me if this sounds right... do I pass?!?

1 ounce = 28.3495231 grams

I have 4.25 grams of each metal...

$833/28.35=$29.38 per gram...

$29.38 x 4.25=$124.80 in GOLD

$1528/28.35=$53.89 per gram...

$53.89 x 4.25=$229.03 in PLATINUM

Default Ring

NOOOOOOOOO Not mad Robert....Sounds about right the way you have it figured out but you still need to get it appraised if you plan on selling it. Might just appraise for more than you think and you can sell it for less. Get the paperwork in your hand before doing anything ! I'm going to do some checking on the ring also and I'll let you know what I find out.

P.S. You have to remember the workmanship that went into the ring and the Tiffany Stamp and number on it too...THAT will add a GOOD AMOUNT OF VALUE.
