Default A Visit to Titanic

Peggy and I toured the Titanic exhibit at the Denver Museum of Science and Nature today…it was absolutely incredible! Unfortunately, the museum wouldn’t allow cameras to be used within the exhibit – so I don’t have any pictures to post; however, I have a re-creation of the boarding passes used by those who sailed on the ship.

The exhibit itself was incredible; we were able to walk down re-created passageways on both, the first-class and third-class decks and see a luxury suite and a steerage cabin…in 1912 the cost to sail from London to New York in a first-class luxury suite was $4,700.00 – and a steerage birth was $35.00…an incredible amount of money for the time!

The relics were amazing – there were glass exhibit cases full of paper money and coins, silverware and china place settings. Each passenger class had its own specific style of china that was marked in some way with the White Star Line logo…NOTHING was marked “Titanic” – so the shipping line could move objects from ship to ship as needed.

Personal items were in abundance – and that’s where almost EVERYONE became solemn; there were purses, eyeglasses, brushes, mirrors, perfume bottles, clothing, shoes, diaries and nearly anything you’d expect to see travelers with today – only it hit you that these were from travelers – most of whom who have been gone for nearly 100 years. Probably the saddest item for me, was a ladies purse that had been recovered with all the contents intact – including the paperwork for the home she had purchased in New York and an un-mailed letter to her sister talking about how great things were going to be in America – and telling her that she would send for her as soon as she got settled.

The most massive artifact was a 7-ton piece of the ships hull – suspended by block and tackle from the ceiling – again, the hundreds of people in the exhibit were very quiet in this area…

Finally, as we were about to exit the exhibit – there was, on a small pedestal, a smaller piece of the hull (about 18” long and 8” wide) where everyone was invited to touch it…it was cold to the touch – yet it gave me a very satisfied feeling to be able to put my hand on such a significant piece of history – and I feel it was an appropriate way to say to the passengers of Titanic – “We haven’t forgotten you”.

I’d recommend that anyone who gets the opportunity should see this exhibit – I guarantee you’ll not forget it.

Thank you so much for posting this!! I was *thisclose* to going to see that exhibit in Miami, but I was burned by the King Tut exhibit a few months before (it was an excellent Eqyptian exhibit, but had very very little to do with King Tut and I felt deceived.) Now I'm kicking myself! I have always been interested in the Titanic, since long before the movie came out... but again, thanks for posting this! So glad you guys got to go!

This was actually a traveling exhibit...it will remain in Denver through this coming Sunday - and then it's off to somewhere else. BTW - when you get to Denver - be sure to let us know...Peggy and I would be happy to shoe you the sights and do a little dirt fishin'!
